Food Help

I despirately seed to put on some weight. I'm 5'8" 135. I'm hurting for some mass. My main problem is my legs, bird legs like a son of a bitch. I know I need to eat all the time but I don't exactly know what I need to be eating. Its also a hard habit to get into. When I do eat I eat alot of food but apparaently not enough. I need some tips on what to be eating, how much and when.

Grant, If you want to gain weight you have to eat. If you think you are eating a lot, but you aren't gaining weight, you must eat more. I have made some pretty significant jumps in body weight over the last two years(180-300) and this is what I did. Don't use hunger as a guide. Eat every few hours no matter what. At every meal, make sure to get in some protein. After that, I always eat whatever I want. I just make sure the calories are way high. Make sure you eat big right when you wake up. Sometimes I will wake up just to have a big meal, then go back to bed. One thing that has helped me get in calories when I wasn't hungry is milk. I drink about a gallon a day.
As for as amount of calories you need, this varies from person to person. I never counted, I just watch the scale. If it isn't moving, you need to eat more.
Take your eating seriously, just like your training. It sucks to eat a lot all the time, but if it was easy everyone would be big.
Genemachine has made some big jumps in bodyweight recently and even posted what he eats in a day. If you do a search you will find an example of what it takes to put on the lbs.

Grant,
I'm glad you asked this question because, I have a few revisions to my previous post about food.

First of all, I went from 181 in late November to 220 right now, drug free. The first thing you need to know is that AS will help you tremendously, but they are not neccessary for weight gain. If you decide to go that route, the food will still be important, and maybe even more important.

My first experiment was to eat JM style. This basically means, eat as much as you can as often as you can. It worked very well, but I believe that I would have gained weight no matter what, because I had cut a tremendous amount of weight for a meet in November, and my body was starving for carbs.

I shot up to 200 pretty quick. The last 20 lbs went fairly slowly, but consistently. Once I made it to 200 lbs I changed my diet. I ate a little cleaner, and here were a few of my rules.

1. Huge meal in the morning - 6 eggs, 3 portions of oatmeal, fresh fruit (this was for Spatts), and about 3 glasses of milk.

2. 6-8 meals a day - EAT BY THE CLOCK, not by your stomach

3. Make sure that at least four of your meals are very well balanced (complex carbs, mono-unsaturated or poly-unsaturated fats, protein)

4. Never turn down food! I know that this seems to be a little strange, but you would be suprised how often I would finish a meal at work, then have someone offer me food. If I stuck to my rule,no matter how full I was, I would shove it down. This sort of helps to kick you over the edge on carbs and whatnot.

5. 1 gallon of milk per day. I always drink a full gallon per day.

6. Supplement with daily vitamin, but don't eat vitamins INSTEAD of eating fruits and vegies. You need those fruits and veggies to help break down the great mass of food that your eating, and to kick your insulin level down.

7. Don't lose sleep over a little fat. This is hard for bodybuilders turned powerlifter. If you really care, you can burn it off later. It is very difficult to pick up mass without putting on a little chub.

Practical advice if your poor like me:

Eat Hamburger Helper. Use a pound of beaf instead of whatever they suggest. We call this Powerlifting Style Hamburger Helper (original huh). You can make this stuff the night before, and eat it for two or three seperate meals.

Buy Fish oil or Flax seed oil. I had a hard time getting enough of my "good fats". Also, eat nuts. They've got a bunch.

Other good carbs are potatoes. I just carried them to work, then put them in the microwave, and made a huge baked potato.

The biggest thing to remember, is to get your essentials, but then eat all the food you can get in your mouth. A bit of a warning: This starts out fun, but after a while, you begin to hate eating. When you find yourself here, think about losing miserably to 12 year old girl because your so damn skinny, then go eat. I have videos of myself lifting at the last meet, and whenver I don't want to eat I just watch those videos of my skinny ass.

Hope this helps!

Thanks guys. Its going to take alot of hard work and time to akemyself eat like I know I need to. I will spend more time trying to prepair meals than I will training. Thats just part of it I guess. I guess if I ever expect to get bigger I will have to ust my balls. I know it will all be worth it in the end if I can stick with it.
