I entered my first ever meet today. it was a bench press competition that was being organised along with the Scottish u23 PL competition. I don't like the bench any more than the other 2 lifts, but this was on locally so I entered along with a bunch of other people from my gym.
I loved the whole atmosphere, and the adrenaline, I found, actually helped me concentrate, rather than tiring me out and sapping my strength like it used to for martial arts.
First attempt was 40kg (about 90lbs), which I managed with 3 white lights. Seoncd, 45kg, (c 100lbs), with 2 whites 1 red (uneven extension). Since the judges were being rather trigger happy I went for the smallest increase for attempts 3 at 47.5kg, but I didn't manage it.
I'm please - 100lbs is a PR for me. I ahdn't been pausing long enough at the bottom at the gym either, so this made the lift harder, obviously. I'm too slow off the bottom, I've seen a video of the lifts and I DEFINITELY need to work on speed.
I have another bench comp in September so I'll be looking to increase my total by 5lbs there, at least, while working intensively on speed for the next few months.
