Which one is your favorite and why?

Let's assume it is a chest workout and the kind.

Free weights
Hammer strength
Smith Machine
Dumbells
Machines
Step aerobics

I personally think you need to incorporate all of these things to build a quality physique. Everything has it's application, although some machines should just be there for us to drop on people who fuck around in the gym.

favorite weights DEFINATELY dumbells!!!! They give you the freedom in each hand to do the full movement and also each body part must control the weight 100%

Definately dumbbells, followed by barbells and smith machine. I only use Hammer Strength or machine when I want to go to complete failure, or just to get a few extra sets in when I'm dead tired.

Free weight definetley for me, I would argue over the dumbell though, yes you get a better range of movement but, there is the argument over whats a rep and what isnt, if you are benching with the barbell then there is no doubt that when the bar touches your chest its a rep, with the dumbells where do you say you have done a rep. For me its as far down as I can go, yet my training partner brings the dumbells down to a point 3"inches higher and calls it a rep.

I'd have to say dumbells, but I do frequent the hammer strength machines because I get crazy pumps from them. Exspecially the iso-shoulder press and the tricep one. We only have a couple at my gym, but I usually incorporate one of them into each of my trainig days.

I would say dumbells and barbells are both free weigts but if there is a distinction then Barbells.

They are unbeatable for adding strength and size. Everything else is just a nice 10% compliment to the foundation work. I would say that 90% of all serious weight trainers would be happier with their results if they just focused on 1 core barbell lift per body part and got better at them over time. Plus if you want to be big naturally you need to use these.

dumbells........you can work almost all your body parts with them.........except legs

Im very biased in favor of my bowflex. Very good machine, the weights are a bit uneven in comparison to actual iron, but other than that, quality piece of work. Don't buy all those stupid informercial claims though, it's not some magic muscle builder.

I voted dumb bell, cause most time I am one !
seriously, it's the versatility and free range of motion plus like was said already, best for size and strength gain. Second only to squats:D

Well I incorporate alot of that into my routine (cept step areobics).Sometimes I have to workout alone and I mostley use dumbells but I love the smith machine also.I guess I just like to switch things up a bit.I get bored with the same routine every week and my muscles do to..As long as you know you have worked your muscle to just below the max you can leave the gym.

You are what you eat

its gotta be dumbells.......but for serious size its free weights........RADAR

I switch up dumbells for a few months then back to straight bar.Free weights is what I mostly use some machines for certain things....

LOVE the free weights. I do alot of Olympic lifts - Hang clean, power clean, snatch, ect. And I love getting under that squat rack every week. And even for chest (which is the topic, I guess) my primary lifts are flat, incline, and decline presses with free weights (bar). I agree with Mustang though, Hammer machines are great isolators and should therefore be included in your program. Just my 2 cents...

With the exception of the aerobics you need all those to
build a good physique..

But I guess I would go with dumbells if that was my only choice.

yeah dumbells, are the best for me. i liake the fact that each muscle has to work separately..
the poll won with fre weights though.

I get real cranky if I don't have access to bumper plates.

Only two machines I ever use are a reverse-hyper, and the old nautilus twisting thingie for the abs and obliques.

malkman, I can't believe you said a freakin bowflex. Grab some free weights dude!! My favorite is heavy dumbells and barbells

About 12 years ago, I went over to a friend's house, and the guy had just bought a soloflex (remember those?). He said, "Dude, you got to try this, it's awesome." So I put all the bands on there and did a few benches. I don't know if he ever used it after that.

Ironmaster!! Awesome!!
(Smith w/saftey stops, lockouts an everything else)

I end up working out alone lots at 10pm, so its the best investment I ever made.

What to use?

I personally use a lot of free weights because I got hit by a drunk driver 5 years ago and have had both shoulders operated on! There not the most flexible now and anyone who has had similar injuries know's how important the free movement of the free weights is.

Before my accident I would have agreed with JohnyJuice.....

Just my" 69" cents.....haha

tough questions coz i like to combine both dumbells and free weights when i'm excercising most body parts (except legs of course) for example incline dumbell curls and dumbell presses work the deltoid well but so did heavy ezbar urls with the preacher bench and behind the neck press

Free weights and dumbells are both incorporated into my back, arms, shoulders and chest days....I would love to use some hammer strength but don't have acess...so I make a kick ass workout out of what I can get to.
