Fats/HDL/BP help

My cholesterol results have returned and whilst the cholesterol level was normal my HDL levels were very low.. :worried: I am currently on a slow body fat reducing schedule whilst also gaining muscle and I wondered can any kind person tell me what to add to my diet to help raise my HDL levels. I have recently added 2 tablespoonfuls of Flax oil to my shakes morning and night. My blood pressure was also very high 150/95 and I wonder could this be related. I'm training more than I have done since I was 33 (now 45) and am having severe lethargy problems as well. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance
Ed

Your HDL (good cholesterol) level should be 60 or above. It helps to keep artery walls clear of placque and removes LDL. This will also mean a lowering of your blood presssure.

Possible ways to increase your HDL levels are:

- Niacin (Vitamin B3)
- Chromium
- Calcium Citrate
- Excercise
- Avoid Trans fats
- reduce you intake of highly processed carbs
- make sure you don't smoke
- drink orange juice
- eat kidney or red beans
- incorporate fish into your diet
- eat oat bran
- eat high 'soluble' fibre fruits such as apples, grapes and citrus
- if you suffer from hypertension, avoid taking beta blockers (but consult your physician on this)

The lethargy you are experiencing could be the result of your body not getting enough oxygen to the muscle groups due to a narrowing of the blood vessels.

Thanks Kian, I take agood multi vit, have upped my fish intake to 3 times EW but have recently cut out most processed carbs as well as orange juice and fruit in the effort to shed BF. I excercise hard and often, do not smoke and have never been diagnosed hypertensive. My last BP reading in December was 135/75 which was excellent for my age. I'll make a few more adjusts to see what the difference will be when I go back for assesment next month. K

Why do u say avoid beta blockers? Curious is all cus i was thinking of going on them because of benign tremors and Im already on diovan so i figured i could kill two birds with one stone so to speak.

The original question was how to raise HDL levels .... and beta-blockers, although prescribed for the treatment of hypertension, will actually lower HDL levels and raise LDL cholesterol levels in this case.

Your case is entirely different. If you are currently using Diovan for high blood pressure then you should consult with your physician before introducing beta-blockers. Also make sure that you are not on a salt restricted diet or that you have high levels of potassium in your blood. Don't use any potassium supplements either if you are using diovan.

Are you aware of what is causing or when the tremors began?
