EU wants explanation from Moscow on hostage storming

03 September 2004 = = The EU refused Friday to rush to judgment on how Russian authorities acted in the bloody end to the hostage crisis in north Ossetia, but said it wants Moscow's explanation of the tragedy.

"It is premature now, without knowing the exact situation, to make a judgment on the way the Russian authorities acted," said Dutch Foreign Minister Bernard Bot, whose country currently holds the European Unionpresidency.

"We first have to evaluate the situation with the knowledge of all the details," he told reporters at the end of the first day of a two-day meeting of EU foreign ministers in the southern Netherlands.

But in a later statement Friday evening Bot said the EU will be seeking an explanation from Moscow.

"All countries in the world need to work together to prevent tragedies like this. But we also would like to know from the Russian authorities how this tragedy could have happened."

The comments came after around 100 were killed and over 550 injured as crack troops stormed a school in southern Russia, freeing children and adults held hostage for almost three days by militants demanding independence for Chechnya.

Earlier in the day Bot called the denouement of the hostage crisis in the town of Beslan a "deep human tragedy" and said it appeared that authorities "considered very carefully this situation before deciding to take this action."

Speaking following afternoon talks, he added that "as figures are coming in it turns out that the drama is even greater than I thought."

He notably said that "perhaps at a later date" European leaders could discuss "with our Russian friends" the possibility of creating a joint anti-terrorism force.

"We should also eventually look into what has happened and discuss ... measures that can be taken to prevent such situations from occurring," he added.

seriously, who the fuck is the EU? and since when is moscow accountable to them?

like those god damn europeans would have done something besides rush in food and medicine...to the terrorists.

This has to be the best example of ignorance I've ever seen.
Us god damn europeans are spending billions in trying to help clean up the mess the russians has made for themselves, and apparently some europeans are <thankfully> not as narrow minded as some people.

From what I read of this article, the EU isn't demanding anything. But would rather like to have an explanation, so that we as humanbeings, can learn from this tragedy and try to prevent similar situations in the future. What's wrong with that?

russia doesnt owe the EU any sort of explanation for how they handle the security measures within their own borders.

it has nothing to do with the spineless socialists in brussels how, when, or why russia chooses to defend their country and its people.

and if left to the majority of europe, russia would still be part of the soviet union.

the arrogance is astounding.

I'm with the guy on this one. Russian isn't part of EU, so I'm not sure why they need to explain anything. I don't see the US or the UN asking for anything, so I'm not sure why they deserve anything special.

I also think its wrong that EU is giving money to Russia to bail it out. Let them survive on their own. Sure, it will be tough; but if it gets really bad the US will invade.

Yeah, Russia better account to the EU, else they will send their mighty army to conquer them! Please, that lame continent can't get a 60,000 babysitting force together.

Russia, just like with the Theatre hostage situation, did exactly the right thing. It needs to be made clear that any attempt to win concessions through terrorism will result in the death of the terrorists and nothing more. The blood of the school children is on the hands of the Islamic terrorists.

If there is any other response, it will only encourage the terrorists.

Europe has a long history of encouraging and negotiating with terrorism. It took the 20 year old United States to rid them of the Barbary Pirates 200 years ago just as it still depends on the US today for security.

Isnt this kinda narrow minded? Why would EU have less to say in this matter than the US? It isnt like EU is trying to pull a US and invade a country without UNs permission...
