Well, its hard to separate religion from the attack because politics and religion are so intertwined.In the 1500 page manifesto he specifically cited the fact he was defending the Judeo-Christian value system against Muslim immigrants. In the United States the 9/11 terrorists didn't attack the United States just because they were Muslim and "hate our freedoms" but because they had a political agenda...specifically the US support for Israel and occupying Muslim countries.
