Enthralling Books?

Silent Method

New member
Well, with class getting out in a few weeks I may actually have some time to read for myself.

Can anyone suggest some good books? I'm looking for something enthralling - the kind of book that you can't stop thinking about for days after you've finished.

It figures that you would read something that degrades German culture.

Remarque does not "degrade German culture" in that book, or in any of his books.

I'm pretty sure that you HAVE NOT read that book.

Two books that are good, but nothing like their movies are "Starship Troopers" and "Planet of the Apes", with "Starship Troopers" being a better read. It's a "thought-provoking meditation on citizenship, military service, education, discipline and punishment, and the balance between rights and responsibilities."

I'm reading "Empire Falls" right now by Richard Russo. It's not a "hold on to your ass" type book, but it's a really well written novel about life in a small town. It won a Pulitzer a couple of years ago.

Some other ones I have read recently that were good:

"The Buddha of Suburbia" - Hanif Kureishi

"Brave New World" - Aldous Huxley

"Survivor" - Chuck Palahniuk

"Breakfast of Champions" - Kurt Vonnegut

SLAUGHTERHOUSE FIVE!-- one of my favorite books.

THE STRANGER!-- dark, surrealist.

FRANKENSTEIN

I can't think of any other books to list to make me sound smart... j/k.

These books are seriously awesome though- i think one or all three of these are on that list of 50 greatest books...

Wise be this one in the ways of literature.

I think I've read brave new World over 100 times. Same deal with "1984".

Good books IMO.

I would argue that this book is actually anti-war as opposed to anti-German. The reason that I like this book is because it shows WWI from the other perspective.

I just thought that you might appreciate your nonsensical accusation if it's directed at you.

And yes, Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front is a good anti-war novel, although it is not his best work.

I'm pretty sure that you HAVE NOT read that book.

Why would I make a comment on a piece of literature if I had not read it? As you know, it was written by the same author as one of my favourite novels. Therefore, there is a high probability that I have explored his other works.

In addition, my personal judgment of the novel is my interpretation of his writings, so I do not believe that you can convincingly believe that your opinion is the final word on this particular novel.

You have posted many false and ridiculous things on this board, many of which were just plain nutty.

Therefore, I take everything that you post with a grain of salt.

That is correct.

If one is to draw an affirmative conclusion from your previous claim, then the probability is high. However, that might not necessarily be the case.

Because it's thematically and stylistically basic, All Quiet on the Western Front is required reading in many US middle/high schools. Your familiarity with that novel does not automatically lead one to assume that you've read Remarque's other novels.

Is that your way of weaseling out of defending your absurd accusation, by introducing a straw man?

That is weak.

Manufacturing Consent

Great book.

I might check out Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion.

In a totally different vein my next book is the Motley Crue biography.
