You see when you pick up travel agents docs up over here they never list places like you are talking about in them

If you wanted to see the real America i would want to go to places like you mention. Just the name North Carolina makes me want to see it.

The Appalachian trail goes from the Florida/Georgia border area, all the way to Maine I believe. It can take like 5-8 months to hike it all but you can start anywhere and only do a few miles if you like.
Not regulated but marked and maintained.
