English tourist USA

If i were coming to the USA on holiday on my own for 3 weeks and didn't want the usual tourist beaten tracks i.e Florida tec. where would you reccomend me visiting and why?

Alaska, because it's one of the most beautiful places on earth.

Alaska, isn't it cold and, well cold, and nothing there.

Anchorage is that Alaska even that sounds cold Corky where are you from?

It's not cold there during the summer. It might be a little cooler than Florida, which has a subtropical climate, but it's still nice and sunny most of the time.

Btw, the sun doesn't set there until very late at night, if ever.

Anchorage has a few bars and clubs.

You must see a Pristine Florida Coastline. Not the Tourist traps like Miami, Tampa etc.
Hit a beach on the Gulf coast in the Florida Panhandle area. Up by Alabama. Some have made it on the Worlds best beach lists.
Or on the West Coast there is Clearwater beach or Sanibel Island.

Smokey Mountains and Blue Ridge Parkway(West Virginia, Tenn North Carolina area) is breathtaking in the fall with the leaves changing color. September/October.. and there are web sites to track the color change as it moves south.

Sedona Arizona. Do some google research its an amazing place for rock climbing and a ton of new age spiritualistic stuff. Lots of talk about dimensional rifts and stuff. The main deal is the rock formations and the huge magnetic fields that are in the area.

I climded to the top of Cathedral Rock and sat down. Could feel the force pushing me downward to the ground. It's amazing.

If you go to West Virginia you have got to go on a white water ride down the New River or Gauley River. The New & Gauley are no. 1 white water rafting rides in the Eastern US.

The best time to go to the the New River is on Bridge day in October when the allow base jumping and repelling off the bridge.

You might even see the dancing outlaw, jesco white. LMAO!!!

Thanks guys,

hey y lifter are the smokys on that appaluchian trail thing, that walk that goes on forever.

You see when you pick up travel agents docs up over here they never list places like you are talking about in them

If you wanted to see the real America i would want to go to places like you mention. Just the name North Carolina makes me want to see it.

Not miami or New York, or vegas,

New Orleans. This town has some of the best food in the country and a little bit of everything for everyone.

Great idea...... Nawlinz is one of my favorite places on earth.

The Appalachian trail goes from the Florida/Georgia border area, all the way to Maine I believe. It can take like 5-8 months to hike it all but you can start anywhere and only do a few miles if you like.
Not regulated but marked and maintained.

You blue-bloods will love making fun of the locals with their clean, white teeth and fresh smelling breath!

LMFAO!

It is bad...but not that bad.

EnglishBeef -- what are you looking to get out of your visit? (i.e. Does nature appeal to you more than urban areas? Or, are you looking to go clubbing? etc.) What do you want to experience?

I'll second the Sedona, Arizona motion..

this place is beautiful..

I'm looking to see America if you know what I mean. Yes nature appeals Like New England that somebody mentioned (cheeky shit about the teeth tho wtf)

Have you heard of the melungoens that live in a place called Sneedville up in the mountains. I'd like to see that.

I'd like to see the big sky county (sounds great what is it)

places like Wyoming, Idaho, i've heard if you stand on a telephone book in Idaho you have a view.

There is so much empty space in America, it's the empty space i'd like to see.

Colorado.....beautiful. I like Colorado Springs, Estes Park, Crested Butte for skiing.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming....

Montana.....big sky country.

Montana thats it, the big sky country. Difficult to get a brochure on it here tho.

Rafting on the colorado river sounds cool, does that come thro the Grand Canyon...I would hear all the tourists (mostly japenese) clicking their cameras

EB -- here's a link with all of the state convention and visitors bureaus -- that way you won't have to try to find individual brochures.

If you want to see America and have 3 weeks, personally, I'd pick out a few hot spots from coast to coast, rent a car at one coast and drive across the nation. You want to see space? Drive the open road across plains, desert, next to the ocean, through mountains. Camp, stay in Vegas for a night, etc...

you do realize the grand canyon is *HUGE*, right? the south end of the park is where around 80% of people go, the north end accounts for the other 20%.

if you dont want to be surrounded by people, you dont have to be.

the beaches of north carolina are pretty sweet. we always go to sunset beach, which is small island off the coast of NC. it's usually pretty empty for a beach, but if you want to be by more people myrtle beach is only 30-45 minutes away.

oh yeah, when the tide goes down, you can swim to another island (bird island), which to my knowledge is pretty much uninhabited.

Montana is called "Big Sky Country" because the vistas are amazing. The land itself sucks ass.

That sounds great but If I were to drive from coast to coast would that take like 3 years

Not at all, you can drive it in 6 days if you don't really stop for anything. 3 weeks is plenty of time if you develop a schedule.

Seriously, rent a big ol' American convertible and see America by the road. There's nothing like the road.

The Machine, you are the man, that sounds just what i'd be after.

Seriously i may have a friend who wants to come now, would 3 weeks travelling across america in a car with somebody without many stops, make me want to kill him. (plenty of places to bury him i suppose)

And really could you travel from east to west in 3 weeks, beacuse that would be the best way of seing so many states

I don't know about the wanting to kill him part... But yeah, you could drive it. Don't pick up any hitchers though. You'll have a few long driving days, but so what...

Pick out some places that you want to see and drive point-to-point.

and that would be a very good way to see thousands and thousands of uneducated, poor, rural, americans. that's the real america that they don't show you in the postcards and commercials.

i wouldnt mind visiting scotland, though.

Scotland is beautiful you should.

What is it about the French, aren't very American friendly anyway are they, or English friendly

I had more fun in London than anywhere. God, there was so much to see! If you're a history buff....that's the place.

We went down to Cannes for a few days, I didn't have any problems. They were nice to me. Go figure......

Rent a Small MotorHome picking it up in say the D.C area,
and dropping it off on the west coast and flying back from there.

I would like to see: (SP? on below)
Grand Teton's area

Grand Canyon

Yosemite Natnl Park

Valley of the Gods Colorado, I think its called with the huge 100 ft + pillars of stone in the middle of a valley

Giant Redwoods trees of Northern California

Detroit Gang Violence live (NOT !)

You might well get respect and possibly even karma on this board for that statement but you will undoubtedly not realise both the irony of ur statement or what you are missing out on if you continue to think that way. You may not like their politics but that is one of the most beautiful and culturally rich countries there is.

ok, first I wasn't with my statement after Karma or repect. if i were after respect I would have posted serious comments on the Training board.

Secondly I have visted France Twice, I even took my family too Eurodisney for christmas.

In my OPNION the French are arrogant and I'm not that hot on the french.

As for politics, christ I never even mentioned them, I do not know enough to comment them.
