short version because I realized I wrote a frikken tome:
Six months ago I had a body fat of 40% today I measured at 27%. I wear pretty much the same size in clothes and while I know I've gained strength, I just can't believe that I actually lost that much body fat % w/o a change in clothing size. Could it be possible?
long version:
okay so i had my body fat measured today. 27%. I'll bet most of you think that's horrendously high, but for me it seemed suspiciously low. You see, I'm a big girl. I am 5'6" and wear a 14-16 on bottom and 16-18 on top. I think I'm in the 190s somewhere. Last July I weighed in at 208 and decided enough was enough. I've got a slow metabolism and I binge so the weight wasn't a huge suprise, but I knew I couldn't let it go any further. I started lifting and doing cardio regularly and for a time ate better. In Aug I had my bodyfat checked and it was at about 40%. Then I sprained my ankle and basically stopped cardio but kept on with the the weight lifting for about five months straight. I did start cardio again but never as consistently. In that time I lost about 15 lbs and got a new body fat at 37%. Then I went home for break and did diddly squat for about a month. Uck. So I gained about ten pounds although my next body fat test showed 34%... didn't quite understand that but I figured these things have a bit of error. So lately I've been getting some exercise by going all over the place and my eating isn't a wreck, but I don't think I'm really losing much weight. I still wear pretty much the same size as when I started, so I just don't understand how my body fat could be any where near so much lower.
My only thought (other than numbers maybe being off) is that maybe I've gained a lot of muscle mass but not lost very much fat. My friend once told me he thought I could have the genetics for bodybuilding. I laughed at him because I've ALWAYS been doughy and unathletic (although I loved sports and worked my ass off) and my upper body has always been weak. It just seemed like a ridiculous notion, but I have gained a fair amount of strength through weight training (not a wonder woman type, though). I can see my triceps poking their way out under all that fat. My legs have always been pretty strong, and before I sprained my angle I was pressing almost 300 lbs (that was after maybe six weeks of lifting).
Eh, I'm just wondering what y'all who are more experienced think of this. The other girls were in the 22-25% range and definetly nowhere near fat. Looking at my body 27% just doesn't seem like it could be right, but I do trust the person who took it to know what they were doing. With the error it could of course be as high as 30% but that still seems low to me.
