Do you need to bulk if going for strength? (Possibly a dumb question)

It makes sense to me to bulk if you're trying to add more muscle and are going for added LBM.

But if your focus is on strength, couldn't you afford to be quite lean since you are trying to add muscle strength rather than mass?

you can increase strength a lot without eating a bulking diet or gaining weight. In time that would result in leaning out at the same weight. If your goal is to be as (absolutely) strong as you possibly can, you'll eventually want to gain weight, but you can attain a huge strength-to-bodyweight ratio and a really good level of absolute strength without getting large. Lots of little ripped guys in lower oly lifting weight classes cleaning multiples of bodyweight.

I agree with Tagio. I have a question, though...

How does one go about doing this? Just lifting like they normally would?

Also, I know that having excess weight helps to support the tendons/ligaments and prevent injury. Well, I don't know it. Just what I've heard. Truth or not, you tell me.

I agreee you can get strong as Hell without gaining weight. There is a limit though based on body. 2x body weight 3x body weight.

I think for this, you can't lift normally like a bodybuilder..... Perhaps do more olympic lifts and heavy weight and explosively, ie CNS type of training.

strength and mass come somewhat hand in hand

were are the strength athletes when you need em................

Of course not.......most powerlifters stay in the same weight class for YEARS

you still need to eat higher then maintenance cals, but not much more, and not too many more carbs. the protein helps to make your muscles leaner and stronger if you are trying to do this. it takes a rather good diet to do it too.

Eventually your CNS would maximally adapt and i think at that point you would need more muscle size. Luckily, i believe that most people are not even close to the most their CNS could put out. IMO
