Dextrose vs. Maltodextrin for post wokout

which one do u use for post workout shakes?

yea thats what I have been using for a little while now and I like the affects of it but Im getting ready to order some more and was looking at dextrose too, but I think im going to just stick with what works for me.:)
 
I spoke to Alex at the protein factory. I was thinking of replacing the maltodextrin in my custom post workout powder with dextrose. He said they were virtually interchangeable, no reason to favor one over the other.
 
I think they are basically interchangable. I'm almost possitive thier GI ratings are nearly the same. Both are very high GI so either way you get what you need for a post workout replenishment.
 
I was thinking about switching from Pfactory's maltodextrin to supplement directs 11lb jug of dextrose for $10, it sure beats the price of Pfactorys $2.49 per lb...

has anybody used this stuff before? good/bad?

Sorry bro, I must have cleaned them out. It is some good stuff though, I've used it for a couple years inplace of Phosphagen HP. I haven't been able to pack on forty pounds with it though like Kovacs did.
 
the only real difference is that maltodextrine is better flavorwise if the protein powder or whatever you are mixing it with is already sweetened.

Maltodextrine is pretty flavorless (sorta reminds me of marshmellows) while dextrose is very sweet. If you are throwing in more than 6-70g of the stuff I'd definately recomend the maltodextrine. you can get it at any online home-brewing (beer) supply store dirt cheep.
 
Bros! Maltodextrin is a polysacharide. It is low glycemic! Use sucrose or glucose (dextrose) post-workout. It is one of the worst carb choices for post-workout.

If you guys want Maltodextrin goto your local home brew (beer) store. They use it for their beer! Its dirt cheap besides. -seitz-

It's High Glycemic. This is based on white bread=100.

Fructose 32
Lactose 65
Honey 83
High fructose corn syrup 89
Sucrose 92
Glucose 137
Maltodextrin 137
Sugar, White 142
Glucose tablets 146
Maltose 150



It's slow release, assimilation rates follow

dextrose=1min
fructose=10min
maltose=30min
maltodextrin=60-120 min

It's not a good choice for carb-up. It is better suited for pre-workout and morning meal, to provide sustained energy. It safe for hypoglycemic people to use, and it won't spike insulin levels which can lead to hyperglycemia(diabetes) later in life (or sooner).

When taking simple sugars in large quantities, eat plenty of protein and complex carbs at the same time to preven fluctuating sugar levels and decreased energy.

I can't believe this is still hanging around. Well, you have two choices, use a simple sugar like dextrose that is best for promoting an insulin response (they use it for glucose tolerance tests) or choose maltodextrin which someone posted has a Glycemic index of 137 :rolleyes: and yet it has a slow release of 60-120 minutes :confused: I know what I'm doing.

How about Maltofern? I heard it's not to tasty though, but supposed to be than dextrose and maltodextrin.

Where's the proof??? I've been using Malodextrin for about a year in my shakes (post and regular) and I've seen much better results from the Malo. then the Dextrose. And when i say much better, i mean much better. I've tried two differant kinds of Dextrose and neither of them worked they way Malodextrin did.
 
how do you guys tell that one works better than another? Better vascularity after drinking? Better pump? Better recovery the next day?
 
The reason why I say it's better is this. When guys take insulin, the carb they always recommend is dextrose, not maltodextrin. There must be a GOOD reason behind it.

LOL! Have you ever actually tasted dextrose? The taste is so sweet that it makes me wanna puke my stocmach out!! What comes to maltodextrin, the taste is quite natural. It tastes almost like nothing..

I use 3-4 scoops of malto in my post workout drink along with 3 scoops of whey protein and one table spoon of creatine.

I know dextrose with insulin has something to do with the body's sugar/insulin balance, I mean that if you don't take SIMPLE carbs with slin, you go into an insulin shock and that's not a good thing :)

Medium- acting (sorry don't know the real english word for this as I'm a foreigner) maltodextrin with a DE value of 6-10 would be good for post-workout. A lower DE value means that it os absorbed slower and more steadily and higher values mean rapid absorption and a spike in blood sugar levels.

PS. I used to take maltodextrin with a DE- value of 18.5, and then when I swithced to a malto with a DE value of 6, I felt a great difference in recovery, my energy levels stay the same after training and I never feel tired after workouts.

So, my recommendation is that use maltodextrin with a DE value around 6-10... Try it, you'll feel the difference.

i hate dextrose, every time i hear dextrose i think of muscletech's crap, maltodextrin all the way
