Depressed over lift

Twitched

New member
Hi guys...

I've been powerlifting now for about.. 2 months.. westside for 1 month..

I am 182 lbs. 5'10".. I had a 200lb bench, 335deadlift, 300 squat when I started...

Since I've been doing westside my bench is doing great, I'm pretty sure I could do 250 now.. (all raw, I am too weak as you can see to mess with equip)..

But I tried to deadlift today and could BARELY lock out 300!..I've been hitting the westside ME exersizes real hard and my form feels and looks great.. It feels mega productive.. so I was SHOCKED to find my d/l went down...

I was a natural deadlifter (even though it doesnt sound like it with such a low poundage, but I started with a 135lb max and worked up to a 315lb max in 3 months and was adding weight every single week)..

I am a damn shitty bencher, and now I am optimistic about my bench...

I've heard people who are natural strong benchers can lose poundages when doing westside...

Deadlifts never seemed to overtrain me.. do you guys think if you're natural at deadlifts you should just do deadlifts?..

maybe westside works well for the things you are not a natural at?

I don't know.. I'm discouraged..

Dude dont even sweat it. Thats just beginner worries! Really. I have missed shit that i have got for 2 reps before. Chalk it up to the elements. Tired, over training, or hell bad form. Or no psyche. I rememeber someone telling me they open with 620lbs on the deadlift but cant pull it in the gym. I cant pull deadlift maxes in the gym for shit. I just dont get psyched up like i do when i bench. I have done the same on bench as well though. You will get it when it counts. Or try again next week or two. But with deadlifts though i have pulled 2 reps before with a weight and another day day not budge it to my knees. Just wasnt in it.
Head up bro! Relax and lift, your not getting weaker.

If anything blame your central nervous system. Now that i am for real on.

First off... congratulations on the bench increase. The decrease in your deadlift could be a result of a number of things: diet, sleep, training, mental preparation, etc. What type of things were you doing for the deadlift while doing the westside routine for one month? Westside usually doesn't place a lot of emphasis on the deadlift itself, but rather the muscles that perform the movement.

Perhaps over time your form deteriorated. But like Jay said, it is probably a mental thing. Or maybe it was an off day. Don't get discouraged; your improvement over only a month is reason enough to be happy!

Perhaps you want to incorporate more deadlift specific movements into the westside routines, such as pin pulls at various heights with or without bands, or even the full range of motion movement.

If your deadlift still isn't going up, perhaps you would want to train that like you were before. You seemed to make great gains on it just by repetition training.

Good luck!

some people lose a bit off their lifts while the get acustomed to the program....then make steadygains.

Dude, don't even sweat it. I would recommend deadlifting once per month for a Max Effort movement, then do box squats and GM's for the other three movements per month. This will give you a chance to keep in the pulling groove.

Don't sweat a miss unless you continually miss a weight on a particular lift. Keep at it. Don't give up. You will be just fine.

PS a month is nothing. I dont think you can judge if it is working or not...but such a small amount of time

as well as Jay was saying...it hard to pull max deadlifts in the gym.
Its a weird lift. I remember louise simmons saying....if you wanna deadlift big , you have to be crazy.

Thats pretty much true. If you dont have the drive and anger (i guess anger) then you wont pull as much as you did the last time you deadlifted and you were pysched up

this happens to all of us. those days just suck. you have to remember those days the next time u come into the gym and blow up those weights. use that as motivation!

This might be controversial here but so what. Dialog is a good thing.

I think new lifters should only be concerned about putting on as much muscle as they can. They should bulk up by doing more of a bodybuilding routine. After they have done this, then they should start doing more of a Westside routine.

The reason I say this is that I believe that there is a limit in the body as to how many muscle fibers will contract in order to lift a certain amount of weight. This is predetirmined and is set low so that your muscles do not rip themselves apart lifting something. You can train your CNS, which determines the percentage of fibers you contract, to lift (or contract) more through a powerlifting routine but I think that a beginner doesn't have enough muscle to warrant such an approach. The early muscle mass approach will also help them to strengthen their connective tissue which takes longer than muscle fiber to strenthen.

Any other opinions? <gr>

Yeah dont worry twitched, you will pull more than that soon. There are days when I feel like I can lift abything and then there are off days so dont sweat it like the others said.

I will reommend getting a sled and start doing that. You will gain on your deadlift by working hard at sled dragging-believe me it works.

If your forearm held you back then start doing some grip work.

Dont despair you will be breaking your own record soon
