Cutting v bulking: which is more effective?

I have never been on a cutting cycle before (my ectomorphic genetics and all the running from Australian rules football kept the fat off when I was younger) so was wondering which of the two is more effective?

Basically, what I want to know is: is it easier to gain more muscle as a % of total weight gain or easier to lose more fat as a % of total weight loss?

I hope that makes sense.

Depends on your genetics, i personally gain and lose easily. But some ectomorphs have a lot of trouble gaining weight and others who put on fat easily have trouble losing fat and keeping muscle mass. If i was a ectomorph like you i wouldn't even worry about cutting i would be in a year round bulk.

As stated above it's all genetics. I put on size easy, but when it comes to losing fat I have to diet my ass off.

I don't remember what body type I am, but bulking up is way easy for me. Losing is rather easy to a certain point. Once I hit that point, then I've got to really watch what I eat and do a bit more cardio.

I am on the opposite scale: Never been on a bulking diet.. :-)

I think I loose fat quite easily, and also maintain LBM well, which leads me to believe it might be somewhat not too difficult for me to gain LBM once I am set for that... I always think of myself as a meso-endomorph...

But yep, it is ALL about genetics (though willpower and determination will play an important role here, as well as knowledge of what you are doing)
