what are some things i can do to fight the late night urge to binge eat? i know i'm not really that hungry but i have some sort of mental dependancy on binging at night.... what can i take at night to eliminate these cravings? caffeine and ephedrine make me crave sugar there for i don't take that stuff

5-HTP. It's the precursor to a neurotransmitter called serotonin, deficiencies of which are linked to extreme carb cravings.

what about leptin or sometihng?

byw i take strattera from my doctor. i am getting off the ritilin i wonder if that is causing these sudden hunger attacks

Doesn't ritalin kill your appetite? I've done it a couple of times recreationally, and found it very hard to eat on it. If you're trying to get off it, and you're used to the appetite supression it provides, it makes sense you'd get extreme cravings.

thats what i'm thinking too......

drink a couple liters of water... that will fill you up.. or take a couple spoons of psyllium husk... i eat peanuts... but thats probably not that great :p

water and fibrous vegies wont help him with his problem.many stimulants and chromium should sort u out.

I disagree.

Coming off ritalin, I think the problem is a neurotransmitter imbalance (too many or too little catecholamines and/or too little serotonin), especially if he's only getting these cravings late at night. Chromium affects blood sugar, not neurochemistry, and there are far stronger glucose disposal agents than that, such as r-ALA or Metformin.

ceebs, i'm taking r-ala too... i should just stop using this strattera stuff my doc is giving me. Strattera is a norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor...but it hurt my sex drive and made me hungry as a horse.

OXANDRIN, I'm afraid I don't know anything about Strattera, and rxlist.com - where I usually go to learn about prescription drugs - wasn't very helpful in finding out more. If I understood right, and you think it's causing your cravings, ask your doctor to put you on something else. I say ask before you stop, because there may be some problem with quitting it cold turkey - wish I knew more about the drug. There may also be a contraindication between Strattera and 5-HTP, so ask him about that too to make sure I didn't just recommend something that'll kill you. :)

In the meantime, if the source of the cravings is habit, rather than real genuine hunger, try filling up on fibrous veggies, or something else really low calorie that won't kill your diet.

I've had the same problem from time to time, and have been known to put down over a pound and a half of steamed broccoli, plus a huge bag of tomatoes and a few bell peppers to stay away from the chocolate in my cupboard (which I keep around for cookies and pastry-making, spent a fair amount of money on, and can't just throw out). You said you had some kind of "mental dependency" on bingeing late at night, which suggests to me (again) a serotonin deficiency, or a learned behavior that you'll either need to unlearn or replace with overeating on something healthy, OR both. Keep on keeping on with the r-ALA, it's great stuff.

Good luck.
