I was curious as to how my back was progressing so I got my wife to take a couple of shots with the web cam, they turned out okay so I thought I'd post them.
I've always had a small back, the progess that I've made is the result of heavy sets of deadlifts, 3-5 sets of only 5 reps, so for me at least, 5 reps is plenty for growth.

I'm just 2 weeks into dieting so I'm carrying a little more bf than usual

Looking great man!!!

is it only me, or what, but i can only see thumbnail views of the pics and when i try and see bigger i need to be a Platinum Member..

You look like you have good thickness but maybe need to work on width. I would sugest one arm dumbel rows and bent over barbell rows.

Thanks guys, I've been hitting the heavy deads pretty hard, managed 535lbs for 3 sets of 5 the other day, when I singled 575lbs I could only do 500lbs for 5's, so I'm pretty sure I can blow up at least a 600 now.
Onemind, I've never gotten much out of either of those exercises, I find I get more width out of pulldowns and weighted chins. The illusion of width is off right now anyway, my waist is normally under 30" when I'm cut, it's 33" in those pics so it kills the look of my back.

I was natural until 10 months ago, trained for ten years before taking that plunge.
I'm 5'9" and around 220lbs in those pics, still need to diet off another 10lbs or so

You tris look thick as hell. Good job....I just started getting into deadlifts a few weeks ago. I used to hate them...now I love them. Finally got 405 up today.

Whats your program like. Same weight for three sets of five? Then when you hit five you increase the weight?

That's pretty much it, when I can get 3 sets of 5 on a given weight, then I add 5-10lbs for the next workout. If I feel like making myself ill, sometimes I'll drop some weight, and do a set of 8 reps.
ie, here was my dead routine last week
3 sets 5 reps 535lbs
1 set 8 reps 455lbs
That routine has helped me to go from deadlifting 3 1/2 plates per side for reps (365) up to well over 5 plates. A lot of guys say you can't grow from sets of 5, but it does work for me!

Great bro..thanks.

How slow is the eccentric portion of your lifts...do you basically drop the weight and fall with it or do you control it?

I lower it in control, reset, then pull again, I feel that the negative in deads is just as important in building mass and strength, safer too.

those deads are paying off. negatives are absolutely important for the bber, a lot of guys try to make as much noise as possible ( to get people to notice their lifts...) Me, I want a thick back. lower under control

I guess it all comes down to hypertrophy...but it is fun to do singles every few weeks.

I actually take mine down with decent control. I bought my bar and plates...so I try to take care of them too :)

Mine is a yuppie gym that probably doesn't like the way I lift anyway, if I started dropping it they would find a reason to give me a hassle I'm sure

I finally realized that my shoulders should be behind the bar. This helped out a lot today as the weight pulled a lot easier.

Amazing how a slight alternation in technique makes all the difference.

People sometimes don't realize how important form is, it's not just about blowing up the weight in a given exercise, once the form is down, the strength and size gains come a lot faster

Exactly!!!!!

Hey guys when you say lower under control you still sort of drop it the last couple on inches, right? I definitely try to minimize dropping since I lift at the free facility where I work and most people there are dilettantes. I am the only deadlifter for sure. There is actually only one barbell for the whole facility and I get dirty looks when I am DLing and someone wants to bench. But I still sort of let the bar drop the last couple of inches. It's ok to make SOME noise right?

Yeah control of the eccentric is where its at. I deadlifted for a year and a half, basically dropping the weight. In the last six months I have seen amazing advances in strength and in my overall back development by instituting a nice slow controlled negative. At first it seems like the weight is much heavier, obviously, but within a few weeks I was back up to weight and feeling much more "in control" and strong.
