How many of you do count the calorie intake during a diet?
What are you optimal % of fat/protein/carbs during diet ???

Not only do I count calories while dieting(which is a must imo), but I also count them while on my bulking diet. I write my daily menu up before I start whatever phase I'm going into and stick to it. I eat the same meal plan every day so I know that I getting what I need, but at the same time not going overboard while bulking. It's very important to know what your puting into your body so that you can moniter your pregress and changes more acurately. BUlking is no excuse to get lazy on the diet, but there is a little more leeway when it comes to cheating. Regardless, calories should be know as well as macronutrient profile of the diet.

Beezers I'm in the same boat that you're in.I to beleive that one should count calories when bulking and I've also kept a food diary for the past couple years that way if anything goes wrong with your diet you can always go see were you messed things up.

I never count calories, If I'm bulking I just eat a shit load, If I'm cutting I bump up the cardio and eat really clean. I would go mad if I counted calories. :p

You're exactly right about the food journals. I too have kept one for several years now and they are the best help you can get. It enables you the pin point the errors of your ways. Really helps a lot when you try to figure out what works and what doesn't. I couldn't live without my diet journal.

I have a great knowledge about the nutritional value of almost all foods, it is almost uncanny...hehe

A couple of years ago I used to count calories, but nowadays I don`t need to, I know that when I am bulking I use 1,5 dl (decilitre) rice/meal, when on a diet 1dl rice/meal for example. Also I try to get about 40-50g of protein/meal, but since I always eat the same food i don`t have to count calories.

This is of course indirect counting of calories, but it is not a pain in the ass, nor as obsessive as really counting every day...

I never do really strict diets though, if I did I guess I would count calories in a more strict regimen.

For me the best energy intake ratio to loose fat and retain muscle seems to be 45-50% carbs, 15%fat, 35-40% protein.

Are you thinking about competing Molle, or is it just a little hobby diet?

when dieting i count very precisely what goes into my body, when bulking i just make sure to take over 5000cals/day.

HA ha, hobby diet - what is that ??? :) I will not be competing in the close future, but maybe later on....even though I doubt it !!!

I need more mass...never been this fat before - never been over 12 % before... but now I'm close to 14 % I think...

So this is my first "real" diet, and I find it very hard to vary "what to eat", seems like you guys have the same problem. Lots of the same stuff every day :(

I would go mad if I counted all day - ugh :)

If I have the info for the food, then I calculate it, if its something like a potatoe then i kinda guestimate, so I do keep track of everythign I eat I just dont know how exact that is....its pretty close

I really think its a matter of necessity. If your absolutely hardcore and competing and know exactly how many calories your burn and have specific weight gain/loss goals then you should be counting cals. On the other hand if your just a backyard fitness buff and want to look and feel good then you should count to some degree but not strictly. Say like oh I can only eat so many carbs and fats and need so many grams of protein but not literally count the cals.

And finally for those pencils who can't seem to hold a half a pund of water..............you should fuckin eat anything. I mean stop by Burger King after the gym then an hour later go to Wendy's. I've seen guys eat there asses of and not gain shit cause their diet was too clean.

Everyone has different dietary needs obviously so its a matter of analyzing yourself and eating accordingly. It's common sense.

<end of rant>

BTW I just count protein and try to stay away from greasy shit and too many carbs.

I do have the daily can of tuna, 2 duoble scoop protein shakes, and designer protein bar to get enough quality protein.

Nice bro, for me it's chicken breast instead of tuna... :)

The only thing I really count is my protein... to make sure I have enough in my daily diet... oh, that and ounces of water... Everything else, I just try not to be hungry all day and make sure I eat enough. If I had to guess, I'd say I ate around 4000cal's a day.

And if I try to cut, only a few days of cardio is needed... same diet.

When bulking I dont waste my time counting my calories I just eat like a damn animal till my stomach cant take more. Thats my philosophy and it works.

i wrote my daily calories down more when i was first learning what the different foods had in them.after doing it for so long i know what i'll be eating and what foods to add inn or take out depending on what i'm doing.when i have one of those days where i get my diet all screwed up, i may jot down my meals and add them up and see if i need to have an extra shake or whatever...............................

I agree... only thing i count is my protein to make sure i get enough whether bulking or dieting. And w/ the carbs i don't count it but i know more or less how much i take a day and see how body reacts to changes, when differences are noted i just change carb amount if necessary.

Im another protien counter, Ive just started in this game so I'm not too good at it. I fuckin ran out of protein shakes last week and don get paid till tomorrow so Ive not been getting enough. For this reason I've taken 4 days out of the gym.... back in tonight, protein shakes tomorrow. I'll get there soon.

I had to start counting. My last cycle, I thought I was eating enough, and after researching my diet, I found I was consumiing about half the calories I needed to. Hence, minimul gains from my last cycle.

I will be fixing my diet and training before my next cycle next spring.

I count, but on the same token, I don't count. While dieting, I try to eat 5-6 small meals. I'll eat a 40-50 grams of protein and just keep the carbs fairly low, but I don't count the total amt. of carbs. I know which fruits/vegetables have the fewest calories per serving, and I use those.
