Cardio... Before Or After Lifting?

season7445

New member
ALright there are a lot of differnet opinions on wether or not is best to do cardio before or after weight training. So I would like to get some input on what is better and why you prefer it.

Karma to all!

Thanks for any help!

If you have to do both cardio and lifting in the same session; AND assuming your trying to lose fat and/or build muscle, lift before cardio.

Two reasons: Lifting needs to be done with intensity to build muscle. If you burn up your glycogen stores doing cardio, you will not have to energy to lift effectively and you will not grow.

Also, if you lift first, that will deplete your glycogen stores so that you will burn fat during cardio. Studies have shown that you will burn more fat calories AND more total calories by doing resistance training first, then cardio.

Cardio first. Lift second. Then go home and sleep. Well, after postworkout shake and meal. Then sleep.

In the morning on an empty stomach. Split Cardio and Weight workouts. Do Weights in the evening. Might not be what you want to hear, but definitely the most effective and most ideal for retaining lbm while cutting.

I agree. Cardio in the AM on an empty stomach. Weights in the PM
If that is not possible weights first then cardio right after

I do cardio once a week on a 4 day split, and I do it at night. I saw results with just 2 weeks of doing cardio. A great diet maintains your losses too though.

It doesnt matter when you do cardio. The body does not burn fat any more efficiently in the AM as opposed to the PM. The only limiting factor is if your glucose levels are elevated. Then the body will prefer to burn that as opposed to fat. But like ny said above, if you do both cardio and lifting in the same session it's better to do the cardio last.

Doing cardio on an empty stomach is known as cardio in a fasted state. Fasted means when you havent eaten for 6 hours, i.e youve been asleep.(3am milkshake posse keep quiet on this!!!!!)

Your body will in this state tap straight into fat stores for energy, making your cardio much more effective.

Then get home and bang a big breakfast into you egg whites, porrage, wheetabix, bananas, protein shake whatever. (not a fry up though, that would kind of defeat the object! ;) )

it's so fucking hard for me to get up and start running! shit!

i do cardio post workout more frequently. once in a while i give am empty stomach cardio a try, but i always feel like shit. damn...

You don't get abs like mine with cardio, unless you are already have a nice 6 pack, then you can use it to get past a sticking point. But if you are in the double digits and already doing cardio, you have a long road ahead :)

So can you give me/us a little more insight on obtaining that 6 i mean 8 pack you have there!!!

Hands down, second to none, the best time do burn fat is first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Wake up, drink a cup or two of water with some BCAA's -no calories-go to the gym get on the treadmill or whatever cardio equip you prefer and maintain a pace that is 70% of your max heart rate for about 45 minutes. If you do this 3 days a week, you'll see awesome results assuming your diet is in check. Come home afterwards and eat breakfast....there you go

Hell NO!

Accusing me of being jealous of a woman is pretty low there, JATCA.

I'm just sayin' her abs are not attractive......way too close to a guy's abs....

U telling me you find that attractive in a woman? :o

Thats exactly what i did this morning. It sets you up good for the rest of the day. Feel much more awake.

I'm a firm beliver in the idea to do cardio last and lifing first. The reason is if you do cardio first then you burn off all your glycogen and leave little to nothing for the lifting portion of your workout. Since I think the lifting is way more important than the cardio, I say cardio last.

it all depends:

are you cutting?
are you bulking?
whats your training routine like?
what sauce are you on?
how many hours of sleep previous night?
how many workouts that week?

and many more factors to consider..

as a rule of thumb, i NEVER do cardio before a weight training session!

HOLY SHIT YES!!!

It's just 10 times hotter on Brick than most, she is the whole package, Div: hard as brick and sharp like an arrow.

Holy :chomp: !

So if you lift then do cardio - when do you have your PW shake?
Surely you need to have it straight after you finish lifting? But then running etc will be a pain with a fulll stomach & you'll prolly use a load of your PW meal as your energy source - depriving your muscles of nutrients & stopping your body using fat stores?

I couldn't agree more. If I was more motivated I would do cardio in the morning on an empty stomach!

The only cardio i do BEFORE a workout is strictly for warmup. Some people over do it. YOu only need to run or bike until you first break a sweat. You are warmed up then. This is usually 7-8 mins for me depending what I am doing. Then like Jatca mentioned I warm up my core, no matter what exerices I am doing. Often I will superset, abs/lowerback with whatever warm up exerices for whatever lifts I will be doing. If cutting I will do 30mins of cardio after each training session, and in the am on an empty stomach a few times per week.

dont do them on same day, or split them up at least if you have to do them on same day, never immediately before or after workout though!

Also remember, wait ATLEAST 30-45 minutes after eating to work out to maximize effectiveness. You don't want blood catering to digestion of food you just ate during a work out--instead that blood could be rushing to your muscles. I usually wait 1 or 2 hours.
