ok...this was my first week with a trainer....2X

he worked me VERY hard on legs, which is what I want. I'll say he did a great job condsidering in the middle I saw stars...then almost had to puke at the end..

question is..how the hell do you do cardio after that? I swear I felt like a wounded animal..was only able to crank out 15 min on my cycleplus...

i guess skip cardio on the trainer days?

I am very happy though..cause anytime I go downt eh stairs I am reminded of the hard work I did :)

Your trainer is an idiot.

Yes, never do cardio after legs... there aren't any forms of cardio where you DON'T use your legs.

You know how you work a group of muscles & let them REST - because you get stronger when you REST & RECOVER & your muscles grow? How can you be letting your legs recover when you're working them cycling, running, elliptical, etc?

Ideally let your muscles rest for 48 hours, but at least 24 hours.

Any jacka$$ can put heavy weight on a bar & try to motivate you to work very hard & spot you. That's a shame - I'm sorry you got stuck with that.

the cardio was my idea...not his...

from now on I'll just skip it on trainer days

I'm not so worn out if I can split up cardio & training -- thus my herculian effort this week to get up at an early hour (or equivalently, get to BED at an early hour, and then SUCCESSFULLY get a full night of sound sleep) to pull this off. I generally HATE cardio because my feet go numb (yes, I have bought new shoes, still happens at about the 30 min mark), and I also have these annoying orthodic inserts that keep my everlovin bunions from coming back - they sometimes move around and hurt like a mutha if the arch isn't exactly where it should be.

But one thing that I recall from my oft-repeated first comp days -- within a week of starting religious 6 AM cardio, even if I was half awake and could hear the pillow calling my name.. the rest of my body was like -- "We've got some hot ass muscles that are dying to come out and see the light here -- make the fat go away please." Well, it came back -- this sick urge to do the AM cardio.

But back to post-workout cardio -- I'll do it if I have the time or energy left. Its actually a nice relaxation thing following a hard workout sometimes. Right now I've got about enough left for about 20 min on the bike. But NEVER on leg day. At that point I still have to get down the stairs & out to my car w/o falling down or just collapsing where I stand. If I can get that much done, I still have the challenge of getting OUT of the car & getting up the stairs to my bedroom....

I always do cardio on non-training days too. I'm plain worn out after lifting. But, sometimes when trying to get lean I"ll add a 20 min HIIT after training but NEVERRRRRRRRRR on leg day. It'd be impossible.

Hell, I can barely push the clutch down in my car to drive after leg day :p

stick to cardio on non-training days or if you have energy after workout just don't do it after legs.

That occured to me after I posted! I still say he's not real competent, cuz he should have made it crystal clear to you that you need to recover (cuz that's when you get stronger & grow) & doing cardio doesn't let your legs recover.

I guess I think a trainer should be helping you reach your goals... and we all know diet & resting are as important to meeting fitness goals as what you actually do when lifting - and so he should be helping out with those aspects too... at least checkin' up on you a bit.

My first though when I read the title "cardio after weights...how do you do it" was "with a scowl on my face like usual". Oh I am not one that has to be told to cut back on my cardio. Yes, I do it but I can't say I enjoy it.

I don't do cardio after lifting on leg day. Hell I limp around looking pathetic for a couple of days....not need to make it worse. I do 20-30 of lower-moderate cardio post lift on upper body days and do my regular cardio (more like force myself) on my non-lift days.

Hmm

I think you shouldnt be doing cardio on the same day as you do weights! You should do weights like on a monday wednesday and friday and cardio (20-30 min at intervals) on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday
