Carbs in a 9pm meal....

Alright, I don't want to set off that whole carbs-at-night debate, but I'm just wondering what the best source of carbs are for a meal around 9pm. I have dinner at around 6:30 and a snack before bed at about midnight, but i need another snack/small meal (about 300-350 cals) at about 9.

Is it ok to have brown rice or oatmeal at this time, or would yogurt or fruit be better? (low gi fruit) Of course I'm gonna have some protein at this time too, I just need to know what the best carb source would be.

I'm bulking by the way, but still want to be sensible about diet.

Personally I think that the brown rice, oatmeal, and yogurt you listed all sound like great options. I guess it kind of depends on what the snack is that you eat before bed. Fruit can be ok, like you say when its some of the low GI stuff, i think you'd be ok. My last snack before bed is usually a small dose of cottage cheese to get my casein in. Sounds like you are on the right track to me.

If you are a hardgainer like me, and think you need some carbs before bed, I would think that some unprocessed, natural, complex, low GI carbs would be the best option.

Yams, oatmeal, brown rice, sweet potato, beans would all be good options.

Perhaps someone with more knowledge can give their thoughts?

well the most important question I think should be asked is: What time do you goto bed? I think it is all about relativity. If you eat the meal right before you hit the sack, it may be best to eat mostly protien/efa's/fiber. If you are going to be awake/moving for the next few hours after the meal, then carbs are ok.
