Best shoulder movement for size and strength, standing or seated / barbell or dumbell

The pain slowly built up over the years, and then culminated in a few blowouts. For years I did the movements but felt no pain, but i think it was just causing cumulative damage the whole time.

I strongly think that cannon ball delts are made by a combination of heavy overhead presses, of ANY kind, as well as side laterals. I've tried doing one or the other exclusively and got very little. But when I started hitting them both hard, thats when my shoulders exploded.

bingo. We have a winner.

Side raises are the best size builder... but delts need presses to hit their potential.

Why would a side raise be a better size builder than an overhead press? That's like saying that leg extensions would be better for growth than squats. Or flyes better than benches.

I ask myself that question often. It sure as hell feels like an overhead press would do you better... but they don't.

For whatever reason the analogy to squats/extensions and bench/flies doesn't apply.

I don't make the rules... I just try to learn from them.

I have built more mass by pre exhausting my delts with moderately heavy (35#-45# for 8-12 reps strict!!) side laterals before HEAVY presses.

I did heavy presses for years but the laterals with presses blew my delts up!!!!

Everybody I know with great delts does combo training.

i think the point is, side laterals alone will not buid huge delts.....as leg extensions alone will not build huge quads, etc.....however, in combination with the basic movements, they will put size on you.

Exactly my feelings.
