Bench Shirt questions

Ish

New member
I've been considering getting a bench shirt and was wondering how to measure? Do I go really tight, or do I give myself a bit of room? Any ideas?

ISH-

Im just now getting used to gear(after 2yrs of competing) and am finally getting used to the tighter is better concept of gear. The little poly shirt that I used this weekend was the same one I started with @ 181lbs. Now at 215 I feel its just now really fitting right.

KG18 who was lifting off for me was amazed that 315 wouldnt touch in a poly, so you can see how tight its getting. When I get up to 240 this shirt will be really amazing!

What shirt are you leaning towards at this point?

PS. It was cool meting you this weekend, and I'll shoot you a PM next time I head to Tulsa for a SQ workout.

Later..

Thanks man, nice to meet you also. Let me know when you are heading up there again, and we can train a bit.

Shirt wise, I was just curious where I could start at. I was leaning towards denim, but I'm completely new to shirts, so that might be a bad idea. I was probably going with an Inzer, mostly because I can find them for a decent price. So on my measurements, I need to shoot low and get a nice tight shirt.

Thanks man.

I'd consider saving the denim shirts for 500+ pound bench presses. Until then, I think it's a better idea to start with a single ply poly until you're moving some HEAVY weight and gaining experience in a shirt. As far as sizing, ask around to find out who has your body type and possibly try theirs on. I can say that Titan is in the ballpark on sizing, although it works out alot better when you know exactly what size you want after trying a couple on.

cool, I'm a bit shy of a 500+ bench now :) I was kinda wondering if that was a bit much to start with. I think project has a shirt that is fairly close to my size that he might let me try sometime. Thanks man.

Ish, once we figure out a training day, I'll definitely bring my shirt.

It's a single ply Fury, 44" chest. The arms are going to be the tricky part, but I bet it goes on.

I personally want to try an open-back denim to see if it's easier for me to learn. I still feel like I don't have the hang of the Fury.

Don't waste your time with a poly unless you are going to compete in a fed that doesn't allow denim . Just get a nice Double Denim from Karin Klein, call her and ask her about the specifics. There is no weight restriction (eg. #500+) for denim shirt. We have numerous competitors in the lower weight classes that all use DD. We have 3 700+# benchers at Naz who can make 405 touch. I bench in the low 500s and I can make 315 touch . Half the battle is knowing how to train in your shirt and how to set the shirt up.

As far as sizing, you can to send it back for some alterations if you feel like it doesn't fit properly.

I understand that there's not a restriction or minimum to lift with a denim, but to simply save someone the embarrassment (for lack of a better word), I'd suggest starting with something a little less helpful...unless you're one of those 500-700# benchers. Most importantly, establish a strong base in training before deciding on a shirt.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's most important to get strong(er) before adding something as drastic as a denim or multiple ply shirt. You have to agree that those competitors that are lifting enormous amounts of weights also started as beginners like you and I.

I get alot out of my Fury, and I have been very happy with it. I have been trying to "learn" a double denim, and I think one of the reasons I'm not having as much luck with it is that the weight I'd need to hold to keep it in the proper plane is too much for me. I will keep working on it, but whenever I need a band-aid for my ego, I just throw on my single ply poly and put up some weight; weight I can't even get close to with my 2 layers of denim. :)
