bench press

how is this done powerlifting style? I have read that there is a bodybuilding way to do it(which ruins totators-that was mentioned), and another way to do it. how is this? I would like to up the numbers in my bench, as well as build it, but if there is a better way to do it, meaning reducing the possibility of injuring myself, I am all for it.

The basic difference between the two:

Bodybuilding bench press: the ar is brought down to around the nipple area and pushed back up over the face towards the rack

Powerlifting bench press: The bar is brought down to the upper abs/lower chest and pushed back in a straight line.

The powerlifting style uses more triceps and less shoulder rotation (shoulder rotation can cause probs)

There is a lot more to it check some other posts too.

First read the bench sticky that ARIOCH posted on here. It should be the very first thread.

To add to what cytomel was saying a BB benches with his elbows tucked out at a 90 degree angle

A PL benches with his elbows tucked into his lats.

does this mean a powerlifter uses a narrower grip then a BB ? this is what i picture when i think of arms at lats, or are they flared out at an angle from the elbow ??

Flared out at an angle from the elbows. I grip the maximum legal width, index fingers on the rings. Keep the elbows tucked as close as possible to the body.

We have a video of last sunday and stopped the video wile the bar was on my chest, and it was a great shot of hands being wide, but elbows being tucked. If someone has a pic of the bottom of a shirted bench, and can post it, you can see what I am talking about.

Might as well learn from the best....

peoples champ glad I answered your question

gman bout the narrow grip with PL most PL's use a wide grip like benchmonster was talking about. I have no idea how i'm different but since I do all my extra work close to the body and sooo many close grip things like 4 inches in b/w hands in the middle of the (you got me) I'm better with my pointer 1 inch away from the smooth(I've gotten better at ST PETE my pointer was on the smooth those guys looked at me like I was crazy.

DAMN 733 looks huge, look how the bar bends.
