Awesome new leg press PR!

It was ugly!

I put my weight on. Last week I got the weight for 4 reps. This week I was just going to try for 5. Not the biggest PR in the world... but a PR none the less.

I only made it to 3 reps. I knew on the third rep that I just didn't have the juice. There was no getting it to 4... let alone 5.

I got off the press and walked around for a few minutes. I started to take some of the weight off the machine. I figured... if I didn't have the juice I didn't have the juice. No use kidding myself. I could go for the PR next week.

I was just about to go for my next set with 20lbs off... when I stopped myself.

I thought: No. I can get that weight. So I reracked my weight and got ready to go for my 5 reps.

Then something really powerful set in - belief. I knew I could hit that weight because I belived in my own determination...so I added 10 lbs more to the weight. Now I was going to try the weight that I had just failed on with 10 more pounds added to it.

I felt strong while I came down. I knew I had it. I rep'd it 4 times. A new PR!

Then... on my next set... the determination was still riding high. I added another 10 lbs. I was now going for a weight that was 20 lbs more than anything I'd ever moved.

I knew I could do it. I just rep'd 4 with 10 lbs less.

I rep'd it for 2... 2 deep perfect reps.

A new ultimate PR... 20 lbs more than I had ever done before!

I finished with one of the best leg workouts of my life.

Congrats on the pr.
I gotta question about the leg press. I always feel like I am pushing with my toes and my butt always comes off the ground... is this bad?

Kind of hard to say. So many leg presses are different you almost can't evaluate things.

Your butt shouldn't be coming up, though... and you need to push even footed.

It's amazing how much of it is mental. Sometimes I can make new PR's with pure willpower even on a bad day.

Arnold told a very interesting story about that in an interview. He said he was working squats one day with Franco Columbo... and Franco just didn't have it. He was barely getting through his squats. Then, a group of young kids came into the gym. The kids were all from Italy. (Franco was a big hero in Italy.) So, not wanting to wimp out in front of his fans... Franco adds an extra wheel to each side... more than he has ever done for sets... and busts out a full rep set.

Arnold said it was all mental. Franco had such motivation to move that weight.

That story taught me a lot.
