Asylum Numbers

Awesome Stuff Guys .. I just read through the entire thread for the first time.. I'm very impressed with the #'s you all have been putting up... BUT WATCH OUT... I'm on your tail!.. give me 6 months! - lol / jk

btw.. llike the pic of the tream (wow, spatts - you're pretty...strong! :) lol)

keep the stuff comming and add some more pics!

I just began posting here, but I'm am from Kansas City. I am in school in Springfield MO right now but often times go home for a weekend or breaks. My youger brother is a powerlifter as well, and is often in Kansas City. We both train Westside. Im 21 and he's 18. It's cool to see others on this board from my home town.

Hannibal..Thats what I've recently started focusing more on... I'm now rotating rack lockout of 6 and 8 inches on DE Bench for my tri work...I have been using dumbells for tri work on ME Bench day, but this week I will drop them in favor of JM's and Barbell Extensions... I'm also gonna start adding bands to my rack lockouts as well as on some of my ME work as well....And of course I always use bands on Speed bench...

Got a little bit behind on posting our numbers. Monday was just a day to test out some new things on the squat. No box...just free standing squats. I was tryin out a new suit, and Project and Spatts were applying the wealth of information they recieved from Eagle Gym.

Hannibal:
Worked up to 500...tryin to get a feel for a new suit. Felt strong even though I actually missed the 500. Definitely not a strength thing...just a momentary "tard moment". Probably should have kept working up, but I just wanted to get a feel for the suit.

Spatts:
Previous Record: 276
Monday...............320 (had several more lbs in her)

Project
Previous Record:265
Monday..............221 (adapting to a new squat style takes time)

NICE WORK!

I want to add that this thread was started BY REQUEST of Arioch. If you find it absolutely objectionable, and a threat to the quality of the forum, please say so.

NO WAY!.. great stuff! Thanks and POST MORE!

Today was ME Bench Day.

Reverse Band Press (Blue)

Hannibal:
Previous Record: 441
Today..................452 (11lb PR)

Spatts:
Taking a benching break to rehab.

Project:
Previous Record:331
Today.................342 (11lb PR)

Spatts is taking a break from benching to rehab some forearm issues. She just did AR work today.

Project looked strong today. 331 was his old record, and he blew that up today. The 342 was strong. He tried 353, but missed. He'll get it next time.

As for myself, my contest is rapidly approaching. The band work on Speed Day is starting to take its toll. Feeling pretty beat up...elbows and shoulders. Took it kinda easy today. Gonna do alot of AR work. Will be glad to get back to chains for speed work Sunday. Besides the fact that it will let me heal up some...it will get some speed back into my training.

I needed the PR today after Monday. :) Benching was a lot easier without my back being tight and sore.

My elbows are bugging me too, so I stopped after about 5 reps on elbows out extensions. Gonna switch back to rolling for a while, and see if that helps.

Well computer crashed this weekend so I haven't posted numbers. Monday Spatts and Project did free squats, and I did Arch Back Chain Suspended GM's

Squats

Spatts:
Previous Record:320
Monday..............Back Crunch had to call it off at 221 :(

Project:
Previous Record:265
Monday..............276 (11lb PR, and the most beautiful squat I have ever personally witnessed)

Chain Suspended Arch Back GM's

Hannibal
Previous Record: 375 X 3
Monday...............441 X 3 (66lb PR...should have made 452)

Tonight was a little bit of everything. Everyone did some shirt work. Project even squeezed into Spatts shirt...it was something else.

Spatts:
Shirted Bench : 243

Project:
Shirted 3 Board Reverse Band Press: 397 (I think, just remember him wanting to get that f@#$ing shirt off)

Hannibal:
Shirted 2 Board Reverse Band Press :529 (tried 573 and should have gotten it...just a little slow off the board)

Once Spatts learns the shirt, so she can take advantage of her lockout...AND we get her injuries taken care of 300 will be a walk in the park.

Project did alot better with the shirt than I expected. Considering that the shirt was NOT the right size for him. When he gets his in he should get alot out of it.

I should have made the 573 attempt. Just slow. Would have went back and tried 540 or so, but tryin to kinda take it easy. I am kinda beat up from the bench band cycle...so tryin to recover before the meet next weekend.

NICE WORK!!

nice work.

haannibal- you should be set for the meet... 527 is damn good.
spatts- nice work, glad to hear you got the shirt working
project- jeebus man, where the hell did you pull 397 from?? lol amzing. dont you only weigh like 198 too? if so.. thats double bodyweight + 1 lb!

and now im off to school soon :(

Yeah, it was an interesting day. I already posted about my shirt experience on the other thread, so I won't repeat myself here, but....I got 353, missed 397. My PR on these is 331, so it wasn't all that impressive, IMHO. Was fun tho.

Deceiver, I'm somewhere around 190, but I haven't weighed myself in a couple of weeks.

Monday was even more fun. I got a new PR on squat, and even if it was ugly as sin, I felt strong. I was WAY bent over, and I know my form was terrible, but I got the weight. Wish I'd brought the camera for that one.

I didn't do a full run of gm's with Hannibal, but I did jump in on a couple, and managed to move 397. It wasn't really arched, and I didn't get it all the way up because I was about to lose the bar, but I moved it.

nice work hannibal..

the download went quick, i average 350 kb/s.. you must have a rpetty good server..

project.. wheres the videos of you lifting?

Great Stuff Guys as usual.. Wish you all live near me so I could join you!

I'm panicking.. My bench is sooo weak and I don't know what to do to fix it. It has basically not moved in over 9 months now and I dont think WSB routines are helping my becnh (although my legs and back love WSB)

ARGGGGGHHHHHH - scream of panic.. sorry..

[try doing more direct bench work.. like full range benching on ME day.. thats what i did, aside from including more direct shoulder work. Its made my bench jump from around 180 to probably around 200 in a month and a half.

Oh, I have some. Just haven't cut any of them down yet. I have a tendency to watch my own as I edit for Hannibal and Spatts, and then not make mine separate clips.

There's some video coming of me benching with Spatts' shirt. :D

Wait? isn't a womens bench shirt cut different in the chest?

Nah...again, not going to be the one responsible for the T & A comments.

Seriously, it's a non-issue for me with the shirt. I just have to pull my "pecs" up over the seam like anyone else would. If anything the shirt was so SHORT on Project that he looked like Powerlifter Pooh.

CrimsonKing said:

Like she said...don't think it's different, at least on the Titan shirts.

I ordered a 42, and hers is a 38. Mine's not here yet, so I'm curious to see what the difference is.

The videos are funny though. I may leave the sound in so you guys can hear me swearing at the shirt. LOL

CrimsonKing said:

good video's.. the funniest part was watching you try to get up from the bench after the lift! lol

Yeah, I left that part in just for the amusement factor.

I can't wait to get my shirt in and play around with it.

Um.......

Wrong board???

Wednesday was ME Bench Day.

2 Board Press:

Hannibal: DAY OFF (Meet Saturday)

Spatts:
Previous Record:221
Wed...................298 w/shirt :destroy:

Project:
Previous Record:265
Wed...................221 (tried 265 and missed)

Well I am resting up for the Mad Dog Bench Meet this weekend in Muskogee, OK. The plan is 405/425/450...of course it all depends on how I feel.

Spatts put her shirt on and worked with the boards. Still tryin to work on with the Fury. It is working well...but painful. We are thinking about tryin a denim for her....see what she can get out of it...and the open back would make life alot more comfortable.

Project had an off day. The whole week the allergies have been kickin...and I think they got ahold of him at the right time. He will be back next time and set a new record.

NICE WORK!!

LOL...didn't think it was you at all.

While there are many reasons to call me a dumbass, I think perhaps they were referring to the fact that I left the goofy part of my bench videos in there, and laughed at my own video.

It's karma, so it's no big deal anyway, and it was gray karma, so it's even less important. I just mentioned it to spatts out of amusement.

ME SQ/DL

Tonight we kinda split up on our ME work. Spatts was tryin to break in a new suit. While Project and I had a date with the SS Bar.

Chain Suspended (36") SS Bar GM's

Hannibal
Previous Record: 351 X 2
Today..................351 X 3 (Could NOT get 373 to budge)

Project
Previous Record: 351 X 1
Today..................329 X 3 (tried 351 4 or 5 times...just couldn't get it)

Spatts

Comp Squat
Previous Record: 320
Today..................331 (suit threw her forward on 353 and she missed...straps might be too short)

Comp Deadlift
Previous Record: 353
Today..................375 (397 was an inch or two from lockout)

Project and I had a great battle. Even if the numbers don't represent that. We both brought out 110% from one another. I am hoping that the effort will carry over into the deadlift like it should. We will probably do Reverse Band Deads next week so we will see.

Spatts is learning the equipment. She was VERY STRONG tonight as always. We will have her box squatting in the suit and working on form. So that she can get the most out of the equipment. Definitely will get her Elite in her first comp in Dec. She is an inspiration to lift with.

Nice work!

I can't wait to see what kinda progress your Rev Band Deads have made from the 36" GMs. I started those myself about 3 Weeks ago after the constant repitition of hearing you guys using that height.. So come on, blow away some PR's and give us some always needed motivation..

Man, I JUST read that. No offense, I KNOW you mean well, but please don't say that. I'm gonna go out there and give 110%, but if I don't hit Elite I will still know I gave it all I had, and I'll do it next time. I'm just not sure a statement that bold is warranted just yet. I can't say that until I've done it. 1053 assumes I make no mistakes, make all my attempts, and meet weigh-in. The jury is still out, and will be until the bar hits the floor.

Spatts, you will greatly increase your chances of hitting Elite at the Southern States if you get some competition experience. You need to hit at least one competition (even if it's just a push/pull or bench only contest) before the Florida meet. I shall preach no more...

Screwball speaks the truth. We are lookin for some kind of meet for her to lift in. The one in Muskogee would have been perfect, but scheduling didnt work. Would like to find a push/pull, or at least a bench meet. Have to find something that doesnt interfere with the Band Cycle we have set up for squatting. Hoping to find something on the lighter weeks.

Believe, I'm looking for one. I think I would LOVE push/pulls, since I am still so pathetic on my squat.

FLOOR PRESSES SUCK

Today was ME Bench Day. And it was time to dust off the Floor Press and take it for a spin.

Floor Press:

Hannibal:
Previous Record: 331
Today..................331 (tried 353 but got pinned)

Project:
Previous Record: 210
Today..................199 (tried 210 and missed)

Spatts:
Previous Record: 177
Today..................177

No PR's today. It had to come to an end some time. It is funny that we ALL get stronger together or hit plateaus together. I think we all have a hatred for the floor press. That is just all the more reason we should be doing them.

We did learn something important today, however. When Spatts worked up she made 133 and missed 177, so we went back and made smaller jumps. She made 155 and 166...then made 177 relatively easily. Going to make smaller jumps in future for her and Project and see if that helps with muscle recruitment.

NICE WORK

Resembles the same problem I have.. I can always PR on every ME movement "EXCEPT" floor presses.. So, gonna start throwing then into my rotation more often I suppose.. Have you guys tried using bands on Floor Presses yet? I gave these a shot a couple weeks back with doubled light bands which I guess added about 100 pounds to the top but basically nothing on the bottom.. I still only matched my previous PR in Bar weight "BUT" had the bands to nail my lockout with an extra 100 or so.. I definitly recommend these now...

i find it odd than spatts can only(and i dont mean only in a bad way) floor press 177, but didnt she recently bench 297 of a 2 board or something?? i know she at least got 243 in a normal bench.

if you fail on the floor press, where does that mean you weak? my floor press is about even with my normal bench press....is that weird or something?

Last edited:
D, mine has alot to do with my rotator cuff problems. I had to lay off of them while I was rehabbing my shoulders, and it's still very weak. I was going to post, myself, asking what shoulder movements you guys get the most carry over from. Keep in mind that the 243 and 297 were in a shirt....which helps the MOST where I'm the weakest.

i see...
well for shoulder movements.. if my seated military goes up.. my bench goes up...
...
like i started out doing 95 x 6 on seated militarys and i was benching around 180, and now im doing 115 x 4-6 and benching 205

Palms out or in?

I've been doing them with palms in, and added some raises from front delt rehab too. I also do power cleans and hang snatches on bench day.

You use lats at the bottom too, but I really don't think they are the bigger problem, for me.

Corn, would you believe that my rotators are still so weak that I can't do that with more than 5-10 pounds in each hand? I'm working on those though. Keep the suggestions coming...I appreciate it.

just be sure to do internal and extendal exercises.

Try th eCuban Press as well

Well we just finished up a Speed Strength Phase on dynamic day. Did our first five sets with the recommended percentage (25%), and then worked up to a 1RM with the added band tension still in place.

Hannibal:
5X2 X 133 + choked blue and greens

177X1 + choked blue and greens
221X1 + choked blue and greens
265X1 + choked blue and greens
309X1 + choked blue and greens

Project:
5X2 X 78 + choked blue

89 X 1 + choked blue
133 X 1 + choked blue
177 X 1 + choked blue

Unfortunately, Spatts' shoulder flared up on here again due to the added pressure of the bands. She gave it all she had...the mind was willing the body just wouldn't cooperate. We are going to go back to a reg band phase for the next 3 weeks. In that time hopefully we will continue to rehab her shoulder. And then we will decide whether or not a circa max phase is going to do more harm than good.

Projects knee was bothering him. He made it through his 5 working sets. And then looked strong throughout all his singles. Nice work.

I personally felt really explosive. My works sets were insanely quick. Then working up on the singles felt really good. My back started to wear out however with all the straining trying to rack and unrack the weight. 309 wasn't that bad. Probably had 331 or so in me, but only had one spotter and just wasn't sure of the lift. I REALLY hate to ere on the side of safety, but sometimes you have to.

I think what corn was looking for is:

Speed squats
Speed deads

Pull thrhoughs
Standing cable crunches & obliques
Hypers

Bittersweet...

Well it was a good and bad day at the gym today. We all hit PR's, but at a cost.

Reverse Band (Blue) Deadlifts:

Hannibal:
Previous Record: 529
Today..................551 (22lb Pr)
http://www.asylum-strength.com/videos/h551rbdl.mpg

Spatts:
Previous Record: 408
Today..................419 (11lb PR)
http://www.asylum-strength.com/videos/s419rbdl.mpg

Project:
Previous Record: 397
Today..................408 (11lb PR)
http://www.asylum-strength.com/videos/proj408rbdl.mpg

Like I said today was bittersweet in the gym. We all hit PR's.
Project pulled strong today. Like Spatts said the Chain Suspended GM's with the SS Bar seem to carry over well to the conventional deadlift.

I didn't feel particularly strong today, but the 551 went up relatively easily. I tried 573, but it stalled right at my knees and would not budge. That's why there's always next time.

NICE WORK

Excellent PR's guys.... How long has it been since your last Rev Band Dead day? I scanned through the previous pages and apparently missed it... Also, hasn't Spatts been doing an arched back GM instead of the Chain suspended bent over?

It has been a while since we did reverse band deads, but I don't remember exactly how long.

I don't think spatts has done any gm's in over a month.

Yeah, I took 4 weeks off of them and changed to sumo too...back was feeling overtrained. Intended to do them yesterday, but hit max strain on the deads.

Our schedule has been thrown off a little bit for a variety of reason. Tonight we did ME Bench work.

3 Board Press

Hannibal:
Previous Record: 375
Today..................397 (22lb PR)

Then put on shirt
Previous Record: 463
Today..................507** (44lb PR)

Project
Previous Record: 287
Today..................287 (tried 293 and missed)

Project manged to equal his old PR. And came within inches of setting a new one.

I was very pleased with my workout. The 22lb PR without the shirt was pretty easy. Put on the shirt and kept going. I will admit the 507 was a SHITTY lift. I almost didn't take credit for it because I hit the rack and got it caught under the hook and couldnt lock my left arm out. But I take credit for it for two reasons. One, if it hadnt got stuck under the hook I would have made the lift no matter how ugly it was...right arm locked out easily. And two, using that as my PR makes me set my goals even higher next time and thats what its all about. Scary thing is, that other than getting the bar stuck under the hook, the 507 felt easier than the 485 I took before it.

Nice numbers guys!

Spatts, you get more damn injuries than anyone I know. Perhaps your delicate, feminine body can't stand up to the pounding? j/k :D I think you do too much, maybe you should cut back on your volume and/or training frequency.

Damn, Hannibal, you get 100+ pounds from your shirt off of a 3-board. That just doesn't sound natural. It makes me think it may be a mental thing for you. What do you think? Congrats on both of your PR's.

Project, don't worry about the off day. I've been having the same off day for the last 6 months.

Hope to see all of the KC Crew tomorrow in Tulsa at the Eastside gym. Later.

I'm not injured...I thought hannibal would've caught the hint when I edited his previous post.

I was doing an awful lot of goodmornings tonight for someone on the injured list.

...also, Project doesn't think it was an off day at all.

I think I'll post my own numbers from now on.

spatts said:

I never noticed that you editted my previous post...you never mentioned it to me. And I didn't mean anything about Project having an off night....he just said everything felt heavy.

I don't recall him saying that. He doesn't either.

I just specifically didn't want people thinking I'm injured all the time. I'm not. It was max effort day, and I gave it 110%. I expect to be sore.

Seems to be some dissention in the KC Crew's ranks. :D

Perhaps, there is entirely too much testosterone flowing at the Asylum. It is a sure sign of a "tight" gym when the members start fighting between themselves as brothers and sisters do. Take Westside for example, I hear there have been some major throw-downs from time to time.

Hannibal, lock your doors!

Nevermind...I have a key. I'm coming over to THROW YOU DOWN.

And this was the ugliest "squat" you have ever seen. Hannibal looked at me like he thought I was going to split in two after I racked it, and spatts said "Did you hear that?!?"

Apparently, my back popped rather loudly as I did a combination gm/squat. After we got done squatting, all 3 of us spent a good 45 minutes working on my squat form.

Gonna take a step or two backwards, get more flexible, and learn how to squat in a fashion that won't kill me. :)

Shirted 2 board press

Project
Previous Shirted Record:265
Today.............................265

I finally got my Fury in last week, and tried it out for the first time on Sunday. Goes on easy because my arms are 12" unflexed, 15" flexed. Seems to be tight enough, but it's definitely a learning curve.

I can get 265 off the 2 board, and can press 243. Considering my raw max is 232...not too impressive yet.

Once I can learn the groove, I think the shirted numbers will make a pretty decent jump.

Your strengths are reversed too. You have a weaker lokout, where the shirt helps less, and are stronger where the shirt helps more.

I'm the opposite. Strong lockout. I can really maximize the utility of the shirt. I'm getting at least 50 pounds out of the shirt. Possibly more.

Okay, here's what I don't understand about that.

I went back through this thread, and looked up my PR's:

Floor press: 210
2 board: 265
3 board: 287
4 board: 320
CG 4 board: 254x3
CG lockout: 331

On the surface, to my novice eye, this looks like a fairly normal progression, whereas your lockout is MUCH higher than your board presses. Are you saying that if there was a bigger jump in the numbers, with a stronger lockout, that I'd get more out of the shirt? Just not sure what you mean by my strengths are reversed.

Also, I went back over my shirt videos last night, and noticed something which may or may not be of note. When I'm bringing the bar down, the bar seems to drop much quicker, in a non-controlled fashion, at about the same point I seem to stall when pressing upward. It's hard to tell from the video, but it looks to me to be at about 2 or 3 board height.

Mean anything to anyone?

Not complicated...you have a weaker lockout. Think about this...you bench more than me raw. But when we do top end work...4 board, 5 board, lock outs, we're not even close (you're at 331 and I'm at 403). I'm saying that if you were stronger from about the middle up (about the point you noted) you'd get more out of your shirt. You lay off the same place the shirt does.

Likewise, the difference between my floor and 2 board is almost 50 pounds. Damn shoulders...and wouldn't you know, THIS is where the shirt helps most AND 50 pounds is also what the shirt adds for me.

Thanks brotha....Inzer Double Denim Rad Cut with the back "blown out".

After that attempt I missed 474. Left forearm just gave out. Project said it was the first time he actually had to strain to spot me....I usually put up some kinda fight. Next time...

This thread documents my first 5 months of powerlifting. I have had a couple requests to move it back over here from the training journal board. There are always questions about how to do something when you're new, or what did you lift when you started, or how many pounds did you add each week, etc...

It was fun to go back and read through this. This thread spans from May 17, 2002 (the month I started PLing) to Oct 11, 2002, which was right before my first comp.
