The weight bearing on my body is exactly my problem - the doc said no, no, no to any impact work, even walking. I gave myself bursitis in my hip and plantar fasciitis in my feet in prep for my last comp. I'm not trying to cut right now, but when you get breathless just walking up stairs, or can't do 20 reps on squats without your head exploding, you know it's time to do some cardio ... 
I was a swimmer from before I could walk, just haven't done it much in recent years - didn't have access to a decent pool in Tokyo. I'd ride my bike, but I'd probably be mugged and /or murdered before I hit the first corner
Thanks for the responses - I'm gonna try it, and in a while when I start cutting again, I'll post up if I'm getting the seal effect
