has anyone had cortisol(cortisone) shot before? i was just wondering how these work and if they do work. I've had problems with my shoulder b4 and the other day it started acting up again and tiger balm or anything else dont help. just wondering if i got a shot of cortisol if it would help b/c have a competition coming up soon.

It takes the inflammation away and the water out, I know a person that I train with has had a few of these shots and he loves them, the down side is they will with continued use start to inhibit muscle growth and can cause weakness of conective tissue after awile, he ended up having hand surgery for the carpal(sp) tunnel in hie wrists but still has some swelling due to arthritis. He also uses his hands everyday heavily at work so that makes it worse.

I won't address whether they work or not for relieving pain.

I will however address the fact these shots can have a negative impact on your tendons and ligaments. It has been stated in many reports that they will actually weaken tendons, ligaments and surrounding tissue.

I'm not sure if this is associated with long term use but I would really be careful.

Also, the shots primary will be for relief from pain. Pain in my opinion is critical as it helps our bodies tell us when to quit.

I personally would not ever take these shots unless I had an irrepairable injury and needed relief just to get through the activities of daily life.

Didn't Dorian have a few cortisol injections following some of his injuries in '94? I seem to recall how he said it really helped him train through some bad pain.

They definitely do work, so you might give it a shot. Ha! ;)

And Red, yeah, cortisol is catabolic. But an injection or few shouldn't send one to the anorexia ward :) I think as long as you're fairly cautious to eat really well and avoid any kind of crazy overtraining, it oughta be okay.

I had to get a cortisone shot in my spine when my lower back problems got really bad. It was not fun at all and I wouldn't do it unless you absolutely need it. Of course, a shot in the shoulder is quite different than one in the spine. It did seem to help my back some though.

i will check into it a lil more and wait another week and see how it feels, any suggestions other than the shot?

thanks for replies

for now i'm stretching it good w/my mini bands and using a buttload of tiger balm, hope this helps. should i ice it at some time or another also?
