another ab question...

a female friend of mine is in fairly good shape...pretty lean, but like all females, wants to tone up! i know, i know...she thinks she should be doing abs everday, or close to...this is false correct? and should females not competing be doing abs with resistance? thanx for all replies

You can do Abs everyday, but if you train them the right way, you should only be doing them once or twice per week. If you train each muscle group once per week, then I'd treat abs in the same manner. Twice per week--same deal. The way you can accomplish this(and this leads me to your second question), is indeed by using resistance when training abs. I still see people doing a zillion reps on that ab crunch device. This accomplishes nothing. In my opinion, that is the same as performing 100 reps for Chest with just the straightbar with no plates added, and calling it workout. It is rediculous if you think of it that way, eh?! For abs, I would stick with exercises where you can add weight, which will allow for 7-15 reps, depending on what you want to work with. A few of these exercises are:

1. Machine Ab Crunches.
2. Hanging Leg Raises-legs straight.
3. Straight-Legged Reverse Crunches. Performed on an incline.
4. Rope Crunches.
5. Inclined Sit ups.

If the exercise listed cannot done on a plate-loaded machine, then you can easily keep the targetted amount of reps in check by doing a pause & squeeze at the top of the rep, or simply by slowing the rate of motion of the rep, down.

You can finish up with some crunches if you want, just to burnout. 30 reps on those at the end of an ab routine is fine. I usually try to do 2 sets of each of the lifts I listed above. Done this way, my Abs are as sore as my Chest would be, after a heavy day of benching, or Back after a heavy deadlift day. Given that, I see no reason to do abs for another 7 days--same as any other muscle.

Sidebar--I feel the same way about calves as well. Done correctly, there are no muscle groups that "need to be trained" or "can be trained" every day or eod, or whatever.

I only train abs once a week, and have only used 1 exercise for the past 5 years, and mine have turned out pretty good, you really dont need anything fancy or to hit them 10x per week

I agree needsize. Im not on any AS and I only do mine twice per week and have had good results. I actually train mine for strength, so, mostly with wieght. Diet is almost 100% of the game. This is nothing new. The strongest abs in the world cant be seen w/ a layer of fat over them. Peace

i've had good sucess with abs, as i have a strong core section, but can not see my abs for the life of me in winter...we'll see how they turn out for summer...diet is in check, and now im hittin heavy cardio, so maybe that'll help...but bump for more replies...not for me, cuz i agree with you guys...she's a tough sell!

True that.

I train abs 3/wk.. mostly crunches/ Roman chair/ reverse crunches. Ill do weighted ab work only once a week.. i find that it builds your waist- not a great look for women imo.

I do abs once a week, sometimes twice. Just regular old sit-ups on a decline bench. Bring it down nice and slow and hold for a few seconds, then up. Stomach kills me every time afterwards.

you can do abs everyday if you want and will have awesome abs, but if you (she) is wants them to show... you should do cardio to burn the fat and let your abs *shine*

OH Shit!!!

This is going to take some work!

Abs everyday = overtraining (especailly for beginners) = increased chance of back, neck, shoulder & jaw injuries

Want to see the abs = low body fat! no such thing as spot reduction

Cardio sucks compared to weight training for overall calorie expenditure in a 24 hr time period

women especially need to focus on the TVA, lower rectus & obliques. Crunches are the most over used & abused exercise and lead to bad posture, neck, head & jaw pain

Abs are fast twitch muscles for explosive flexion & rotation of the torso - they need resistance to be trained properly

Non- chemically enhanced females have low test levels and can not build large blocky abs - unless they goto Haggen Dazz

high rep training for abs is useless except for endurance athletes who need a mix of both strength & endurance training for the abs

Machines are useless (not cable stacks) for ab training and usually lead to low back pain!! Due to improper form & setting the machine wrong.

I saw this lady at the gym one time, she only did abs when I saw her and apparently that's all she ever did. She had a fair amount of body fat, but her abs were so big you could see them under her fat. It was pretty strange.

I agree with that. Needsize has given us quite a nice ab routine to follow. I do it twice a week, and it works nicely. Remember, don't go down too far. A 45 degree angle or more is fine, too far and you hurt your lower back.

Hasnt been workin me out enough so I changed it to 5 seconds at 45 degree then slowly go down to back damn near touching for 5 seconds slowly bringing it back up so a total about 15 seconds instead of the 5 originally taught

it helped :o
