Ala

drgreenhill i would agree w/ you w/ all prohormones except 1AD. This supplement does actually work, and my strength is steadlily climbing w/ it. I've gained 11 pounds and i'm on my 15th day. That's excellent IMO.

cozmok i would agree w/ you it does speed up the process a bit by lowering your blood sugar.

Growin, I'm not entirely sure on the mechanism of action of ALA. But i would not use it post workout b/c post workout you want that insulin spike and ALA will decrease the insulin spike. This goes against what you want. I'd take your postworkout shake just as it is, make sure you have at least 50g of dextrose or maltodextrin in there for the spike though.

Nope. ALA has ZERO effect on blood insulin levels.
It does NOT degrade insulin at all, it just increases
blood glucose up-take and clearance.

It does this by increasing the number of glut-4 transporters
on the out-side of the cell, therefore increasing the cells ability
to soak up glucose.

This is how it works....

Post-Wo meal:

Take your usual High-GI carbs + protein,
then lets see what happens with ALA and w/o
ALA.

W/o ALA, your food intake will create an insulin surge from the
pancreas and this surge will shuttle the nutrients you have just
ingested into your cells.

BUT, these would be BOTH your FAT and MUSCLE cells.

W/ALA, your food intake will create an insulin surge from the
pancreas and this surge will shuttle the nutrients you have just
ingested into your cells.

However, ALA has MARKEDLY increased your muscle-cells
Glut-4 content therfore it has a greater ability to soak up
glucose.

So what happens, MORE of the nutrients are diverted to your
muscle cells INSTEAD of your fat cells, yet INSULIN LEVELS
REMAIN UN-CHANGED!!!

What this means is that you have created a nutrient-partitioning
effect which will give you more muscle gain/less fat gain in the
long run.

And to the first poster, ALA prevents oxidative damage, which
is one of the reasons why MDMA is neuro-toxic(it increases
free-redical production dramatically). That is why ALA works
in this case, It is the best free-radical scavenger out there
since it is both fat and watwer soluble.

Good reply Fonz. Don't see you around here much, You mostly at AF? I have been taking 1000mg of ALA a day with 3-400 of that with my PW meal which consists of 120g dextrose and 60g Whey/BCAA/GLutamine. The rest of the ALA is spread evenly throughout the day with meals. Does that sound about right?

Fonz thanks for that very informative post. I know ALA increases blood glucose uptake, and you mentioned that it has no effect on insulin levels. If this were true why do so many people feel hypoglycemic w/ ALA, me included. I felt that it lowered blood glucose levels. I know when i take it I start to feel hypoglycemic, and more than anything i get really hungry w/ it at times even if taken after a big meal.

At AF? No, not really. I've posted maybe 10-12 posts since
Animal got banned(Which I disagreed with). Just been
around at a female board b/c they needed some advice with
their supplements. Thats pretty much it. I post on the A board every once in a while when a perticulalrly good topic pops up.

And your ALA dosing scheme look A-OK.

Animal was banned? Damn, I missed that one. What happened, if you don't mind posting. Was he too opinionated? HEHE

He disagreed with the MODS there about a perticular
idea they had. i.e. Animal told them they were flat out
wrong in his own charming, charismatic way...... :)
And then, they banned him. Which I strongly
disagreed with. But, there was really nothing to be
done. There's 3 MODS there that think they're
always right and can't bear to be told they flat out
aren't. Actually, i'm amazed I wasn't banned too because
I always clash with their ideas.
