A few Q's about major's and minor's in college. And opinion of psychology (please!)

do you be psychology or psychiatric? And why do you say that? I want to get into Engineering or Psychology (no idea what specialization in either is but am leaning towards psychodynamics in psychology). I dont have much more time to decide....

He means psychology. You can't be a psychiatry major, it's a graduate degree program. You would have to major in pre-med, biology, business, whatever the hell you wanted to, and then go to med school.

Instead of concentrating on post grad stuff...IE PHD etc....why not get your undergrad first and worry about the post grad AFTER you graduate.

Just a thought

stick with engineering. trust me. I'm not knocking psyche majors, but I'm sure there are more people doing shit in a related field with an engineering major than with a psyche major.

yea, I know that. I stated it several times in my other posts :D. I just didnt know which one he meant.

Engineering requires so much math and it is always changing. Psychology is a solid science, it doesnt come out with radical changes like microfibers and stuff. If it does change, the old theorys still apply (such as how biopsychology is coming out now but we still go back to psychoanalysis and behaviorism). It's not like either one offers more money or has greater employment options, they are both pretty even.

Can anyone explain majoring and minoring in subjects in college? Like Could I get a PhD in Psychology and a Masters in Electrical Engineering or if I go for a PhD is that all I can get? I dont understand major's and minor's at all...

Also does anyone think becoming a psychiatrist instead of a psychologist is worth it? The pay is nearly double as a psychiatrist and you get a Doctor title but you need to go to medical school and get speacialization in an area of psychology so it would be 14yrs of college opposed to just getting a PhD and specialiazation in an area of psychology which is 6 years.

It depends on what your end goal is. Psychology will not be very marketable even with a PHD, but that's for you to decide. Endineering is good, but remember think of college as investment, and with Psych, it has a relatively low monetary reward!

I'm assuming you'll be starting your undergrad soon. I wouldn't recommend going into medicine (psychiatry) unless you have a true desire to work your ass off and maintain good grades and ace the MCATs. The path you would take in choosing medicine would require 4 years of undergrad, 4 years of medical school, and anywhere from 3-4 years residency (1-2 prelim residency followed by 1-2 year psychiatric residency). Assuming you're about 18 now, that would make you about 29-30 before you are a practicing psychiatrist. This path is not easy as you must maintain above average stats (grades, board scores, etc) along with outside extracurricular activities in medicine to show your interest in the field. However, the path of engineering may be a less stressful route in that in order to obtain an engineering degree all you must do is obtain the minimum GPA. If you're willing to work and have a desire for medicine while maintaing a 3.7+ GPA, psychiatry could be an option. On the other hand, if that all the work is too much for you, go for engineering and maintain that 2.1 GPA requirement. good luck.

All in high school I maintained a 4.0 relatively easy so I'm not worried about grades or test scores. I'm a pretty bright kid, I have scored in the advanced range on all my state tests. I don't want to dumb myself down and go into engineering but I do want to take an easy route. I hate these choices, why can't we live in a communist country so they can pick it for me?

Psychiatry is slowly becoming less and less of a desire now though... thanks guys, I guess I am back to either Psychology or Engineering.

Btw why is everyone saying psychology isnt marketable? With a psychology degree you can work for yourself as a lisenced psychologist, or you can work as a scientist as a university, or get hired as a sales reps, or become an engineer of psychology, or become a forensic detective, or work as a counselor. I mean the options are endless. A psychology degree would have more job offers than an engineering degree imo.

Anyways I'll sleep on it, thanks for your opinion yall!

From my experience, it is these types of students who often struggle in college.

You finally came back to elite, just in time to witness banned members rise from the grave, and flame wars char the landscape.

This website is of some help to me when it comes to career ideas.

Psychology isn't marketable because without a graduate degree you really don't have much. A bachelors in psych doesn't amount to much and i have read (don't know if it is still true) that getting into graduate school for psychology is a 1 to 20 shot.
