A few Q's about major's and minor's in college. And opinion of psychology (please!)

Can anyone explain majoring and minoring in subjects in college? Like Could I get a PhD in Psychology and a Masters in Electrical Engineering or if I go for a PhD is that all I can get? I dont understand major's and minor's at all...

Also does anyone think becoming a psychiatrist instead of a psychologist is worth it? The pay is nearly double as a psychiatrist and you get a Doctor title but you need to go to medical school and get speacialization in an area of psychology so it would be 14yrs of college opposed to just getting a PhD and specialiazation in an area of psychology which is 6 years.

After a year on EF, you'll have your PHD in Psychiatry

It's people like HappyScrappy and Satantic Goat Slayer that got me interested in this field ;)

btw you can't get a PhD in Pschiatry. You can get a PhD in Psychology then you go 2 extra years of college to get specialization in either one of the 5 types of psychological fields or one of the 51 specialization areas. After which you go to medical school to become a Pschiatrist. It's alot of schooling, more than becoming a doctor :(

Let's say you'll make 50k/year as a psychologist and 100k as a psychiatrist. You have to go 8 more years if you want to be the latter so that's $400,000 you'd be missing out on if you went all 14 years. Sure you're make up for it once you did start working in that profession, but by then you'll be ~32 years old before you start making any real money.

I say get in and get the fuck out.

That's what I was thinking. 16 years of college? I'll be in my mid 30's before I even finish college! That's half my life gone just in school... I wonder if I could go to school and practice as a psychologist at the same time after I get my PhD in psychology... that's still alot of schooling though, and like 100,000 down the drain for medical school...

An interesting so called fact about the head shrink proffesion. Shrinks have the highest rate of suicide of all the careers. I guess listening to other people's problems depresses the shit out of them.

do not become a psych major. I think it's a bad move IMO.

do you be psychology or psychiatric? And why do you say that? I want to get into Engineering or Psychology (no idea what specialization in either is but am leaning towards psychodynamics in psychology). I dont have much more time to decide....
