95% of the people who diet regain their weight

Right the problem is that most people who are dieting either do some poorly thought out fad diet or just starve themselves and have minimal knowledge of excercise or nutrition. As a result they lose a great deal of muscle mass with their fat, thus slowing thier metabolism down, and often times when they go back to thier old lifestyle they bounce back to the same weight with less muscle thus end up with a higher bodyfat % than they started with. That is the reality of dieting for the average dieter.

but ive also seen plenty of body builders and fitness gurus go out on well planned calculated diets where they gradually cut off carbs, while lifing and doing cardio of course. sure they get real hard and leaned out but then 6-8 months later they are back to what they were before again.
of course most fitness people are never fat, even at their worst, but they may have that softer look when they arent dieting or low carbing.

i think anytime someone picks a lifestyle that they dont maintain, and uses that to lose some pounds, they are going to rebound that weight later when their lifestyle changes back.

i think the reason you dont see many ripped people walking around all the time is because the type of diet necessary to do that is too hard for them to stick to on a long term basis.

That and if you are dieting very strictly to stay at 5% bodyfat the greater majority of people will be losing muscle mass the entire time, and eventually will end up losing a great deal of muscle and look very different anyways.

I think this is tru if you only diet for a specific day and go back to old habits...
IF you make it a way of life, it's harder to regain weight...calories in VS. calories out

ahh true. all the cross country runners for example. well they dont diet, but their staying lean year round costs them pretty much any amount of muscle they'd hope to have on their body.

The problem is that deits don't work. You changes need to be life changes. Exersizing (for life) needs to be added to that. If the trend continues (for life) then the weight will stay off for life. Stop those habits and yes, they will regain the weight

Bingo

dude, you need to let it out, controversy is what this board is about. it creates life in threads.

Look at competitive bodybuilders on a competition diet, they ALWAYS re-gain the weight. There is a difference between a "diet" and a lifestyle. Most people assume they "diet" and everything will be okay afterwards, a lifestyle change will ensure you lose body fat and keep it off, a diet is a programmed failure....
