5x5 routine

I absolutely love it... best routine I've ever found... but I stole everything I know by copying Needsize's routine and reading his posts. I'm actually almost doing Needsize's old routine now... except for legs.

Needsize, much thanks for the details on the five X five. I never really was sure about the specifics of it.
But correct me if im wrong, isnt the 8-12 rep range supposed to be ideal for putting on mass?
Do reps that low yeild better results?

Thats the thing about this version of the 5x5 program, I believe the combination of low and higher reps works to build way more mass than the highe reps alone. Part of the equation is the strength gains on the program, if you follow the same program every week but can add a small percentage of weight to the bar every workout, the constant progression will force your body to grow to adapt
 
NS, you know I agree with you. I like WSB for the same reasons. The more I read about 5x5, the more similarities I'm seeing between the two. I like that WSB starts with low rep compound moves, then backs it up with hypertrophy range accessory moves...and of course speed work, too. I very much agree that recruiting both fast twitch and slow twitch fibers is advantageous. WSB uses 2 compound moves and then 1 set per accesory muscle involved in that compound move.

It's like WSB is a PLers tool to a great physique, and 5x5 is an old school body builder's tool to great strength.

You know, I've never actually read up on the WSB routines at all, its probably time I looked into it
 
I think the biggest problem I had with 5x5, was the lack of variation in exercises. Sure there are basic compound movements that work, but I believe for most body parts there are more then one compound movement that can be effective. . I just got very burned out on doing the same compound lift week after week, even though the poundages were increased in small increments. WSB changes there ME lift every two weeks or so, and sometimes weekly. I think that is effective. Im going to try the 5x5 again, but try to bring other compound movements into it so I dont stall out or get stale too fast. Any thoughts?
