Franco Cavaleri
Franco is one the best-known and
most popular of the top echelon of BC bodybuilders. A holder of an B.Sc.
in Nutrition Science, Franco is a technical genius concerning medicinal
herbs and their effects on body chemistry and his advice and guidance are
avidly sought by BC competitors and non-bodybuilding athletes. His all-natural
Champion's Choice
line of dietary and herbal supplements incorporates traditional bodybuilding
dietary science with Asian herbalism and alternative medicine. These pictures
were taken approximately six weeks prior to the 1992 North American Championships
during Franco's training for that show, at which he won the Middleweight
division. Franco is also the 1990 Western Canada Middleweight and Overall
Champion, the 1990 BC Middleweight and Overall Champion, and the 1988 Ironore
Classic Middleweight and Overall Champion.
Jim Nickles
Jim is another well-known and extremely
popular BC bodybuilder whose physique will remain large in local legend
for some time to come. Winner of the 1990 BC Heavyweight and 1991 Western
Canada Heavyweight and Overall titles, Jim went on to the 1992 Canadian
Championships in Halifax, winning the Heavyweight division and almost taking
the Overall. Then considered a top Canadian contender for the Mr Universe
title, Jim has been semi-retired since the 1992 competition season and
is busy raising his family and working at his job as a fireman on the University
of British Columbia campus. These pictures were taken about eight weeks
prior to the 1992 Canadas. Jim is 6'1" and weighs 245 lbs. on stage.
Don Weber
Don is another of BC's nationally-ranked
bodybuilding athletes and is known for his impressive symmetry and stylish
posing. A native of Saskatchewan, Don holds provincial lightweight and
middleweight titles from there and won the Middleweight division of the
1993 Western Canadas at Banff, Alberta. Don competes regularly at the national
level where he has placed as a Light Heavyweight. He also "crossed the
line" (the US-Canada boundary) in 1992 to win the NPC Northwest Middleweight
and Overall Championships in Seattle. Don is a self-made businessman in
the sport-clothing and snowboard industries.
Dave Gauthier
Born in Timmins, Ontario but now
living in BC, Dave is one of the best-known faces in Canadian bodybuilding
because of his long competition record and a few appearances in MuscleMag
a couple of years in which he was touted as one of the sport's rising new
stars and sexiest new faces. Dave is a dedicated and regular competitor
but has only placed in the Western Canadas and the Canadas since winning
the Junior (national?) title several years ago. In spite of his difficulties
in the Canadian competitive arena, Dave won the Light Heavyweight Title
at the Los Angeles Championships in 1993 (?) and would have won the Overall
- if he hadn't adjusted his suit during a back pose in order to better
display his glute striations (a no-no in LA, quite surprisingly)! Obviously
a showman on stage, Dave is as dedicated to music as he is to bodybuilding
and is a talented and technically-gifted bass player who has been a key
member of several bands of the "thrash metal jazz" variety. The above pictures
date from the 1992 Western Canada Championships, in which Dave was the
first runner-up in the Light Heavyweight Division, and from a rooftop shoot
soon after at my old studio in Vancouver's historic Victory Square district.
