Ok, I am tired of looking at myself in the mirror and seeing what I see.

I am around 5'10 and weigh in around 178. I have a nice little gut and love handles. It all started when I stopped playing soccer in high school, by the way im 20 now.

Besides loosing weight, I want to become stronger. I dont want to bulk up, but stay lean.

I have already started watching what I eat, but it is difficult living in a college dorm. But I will be out the dorms next semester.

Well, I dont know where to begin in the gym, what to do, how to do it. I am almost tempted to pay one of the personal trainers, but that doesnt seem to be reasonable cost.

I was just curious if you guys could direct me to places that have info on good workouts for what I want. Also, what should I watch for when eating, what to avoid, whats alright to eat , and how much and often.

I read about you guys talking about splits in your routines. what is it? Always do cardio on an empty stomach?

Could I learn any good information from any of the bodybuilding mags out there?

I know its alot to ask, but I would really appreciate the help, and y'all seemed like a good bunch to ask. If anything, can you just direct me to good books or websites to research up on.

Thank you
Jacob

All you really have to do is take a day and read through the EF forums. You have a good start already just being here, but you need to read all of it.

If you read throught the Training Discussion board and the Diet board you will learn a lot about what you need to do to get to where you want to be.

I am not an expert and pretty much everything I know I learned on this board. Just take the time, use the search button and you will learn more than you ever imagined by just reading a forum

Well, sounds like you have he right attitude and all you need is a little direction.

A good beginner program would consist of:

Monday:

Chest and Triceps

Tuesday:

Legs--Hams, Quads, Calves

Wednesday:

Back and Biceps

Thursday:

Shoulders and Abs

Start every day off with a serving of Whey Protien. This can be found at your local health food store and also on this site. A good one to use is Isopure--it is my favorite.
Also drink the protien after your workouts.

When you first get into it, you need to focus on perfoming each lift with proper technique with light weight. You will be dong very light weight especially on dumbbell lifts b/c your stabilizers will be underdeveloped. Just be patient and drink your protien and eat right. And dont make the same mistake that so many make---dont eat like a bird and expect to get stronger.

Your body requires food to grow and get stronger. The Whey Protien is an intrigal part of the nutrition that you need.

The second week that you go in --- step it up to at least three sets on every exercise.(you should only do one to two sets on each exercise during your first week)

By your third week, you want to be doing a minimum of four sets on each exercise. Do as many dumbbell exercises as you can. ON chest and tri's day, do your dumbbell bench, dumbbell flies, Incline DB bench, Decline DB bench etc. Look around the gym and you will be able to see who knows what they are doing and who does not. When you see someone who lifts properly, watch what they do and you will pick up on some various lifts/techniques.

after your third week, you could probably come in with Chest and Tri's again on Saturday, then Legs on Sunday and so on--if you want.

Just remember, when you lift hard and effectively---you tear down your muscles. IN order for them to be built back up properly and effecietly, you need to eat right and eat enough and drink your whey.

You may consider getting a trainer for at least one session if much of this sounds foriegn to you.

PM me if you have any spec questions

good luck
