how do you measure your bf%

The reason I ask is I see a lot of people listing 10% or below and they are not shredded to the bone.
Last time I was checked I had 8 abs and obliques. Not grainy. I was 11% by calipers and 16% when dunked. Everyone at the gym kept saying 8%.
I see some crazy numbers listed (and told to me at the gym).
How many people actually get dunked?
 
When I am lean enough to really want to know I get dunked, everything else is just a guess.


Next to getting dunked, my pants size will tell me everything else I need to know.
 
I use the most popular method... I lie. I fed my measurements into one of those sites with as much credibilty as the roid store, and they figured 12-13% , so that's what I say. But I am wondering about the best way.
 
In the past I've been dunked and use calipers, but there's an anti-aging/wellness clinic that I have access to that uses some sort of laser to measure bodyfat. The machine looks like a CAT scanner but measures bodyfat extremely accurately, so Im told. Im thinking of getting it one there and being dunked as well as using calipers all in the same time frame so I can see how accurate the dunking/calipers are compared to the laser standard.
 
Knowledge of body fat percentage is strictly for personal information, no one else cares, I don’t care what your bf is, and you don’t care what my bf per cent is,


I want to know for my self, but like said above I am only interested when I am very lean.


Everything else is for appearance, and if my bf is 20 percent and I look great I could care less what anyone else thinks.

Well said. I only do bf % close to a show for reference purpose. All other times I could care less what i weigh, as long as I can get into 36" waist pants when blowing up in the off season I'm good.
 
That sounds good to me. At 6-1,240 fitting into size 36 pants is my new method of bf% calculation. That's my size and my waist is never the problem, it's the caboose.

very true.

However a couple other things come into play... genetics for one. Someone with a full on 6pack could have a higher bf than someone barely showing 4 abs, purely because of how they hold bf.

Also, I dont think people realize how inaccurate calipers and other electronic methods are... but then again as long as everyone uses the same scale thats all that matters.

If everyone is talking about calipers (which are obviously much lower than true bf) then at least we are all using the same scale.

Also, not many people have access to being dunked or a BOD POD to measure True bf (ALL of the fat on your body, not just what is directly under your skin)
 
the dunk is actually right up there with the most Inaccurate ways of getting checked as it relies too heavily on lung capacity norms

Get a experienced tech to Lang pinch on a 5 site test(as opposed to 7)
 
I have used the calipers but I get variations each time. I use it mainly for referance and use the mirror as my guide.

I know what you're saying. I posted up my pictures up in the members pics and people guessed that I was about 11-12% bf. Well, just a couple of months after with no noticeable change in my physique, I got tested (using electric body impedence) to be 16.1%. I near fainted.

I later bought bodyfat scales and the percentage was given as 21%, ..bullshit!

I wish I could find something easy and reliable. I'm going to have to go with the mirror. Sure, what you look like is more important than a number but how to be objective, how to be objective hmm..

BOD POD is the answer to that question

Doesnt matter what "pinch" test you get... they dont measure the fat INSIDE your body

also when you are getting dunked you are supposed to exhale completely and then hold your breath, which, in theory would address lung capacity differentials... that principle aside, it is still more accurate than any caliper test

Lange calipers done by a professional will be the most accurate. Hydrostatic weighing is not the most accurate choice for people who are very lean (sub 13%). It is the best choice for people above this percentage though, but too expensive to be worth it.
 
I always used 5 point caliper. It's more of a way to measure change though. I know I have to be lower than 12% to see abbs, then 10% I get good veins on my stomach and obliques, by 8% I have lots of ab veins and my skin is really thin if ya pinch it. Good enough for my logs....

For those who use 5 site and 7 site caliper testing, do you have a formula you plug your numbers into? what are the sites?

I use a set of digital calipers that cost about 30 bucks and does the math for you but it only measures 3 sites which are:
-Midway point between nipple and top of underarm crease.
-Vertical fold about an inch to the side of the navel.
-Midway point on thight between knee and hip insertion.
 

Where do people get dunked? I go to a big ten university, would there be access to one there?


Do a Google search, there are anti-aging clinics, roving tanks that go from gym to gym, and most Universities have tanks.

Here in Orange County and LA the roving tank is the cheapest and easiest,


I thought they were also the most accurate, reading the above post, now not so sure.

As was originally explained, you need to measure the fat we see ( that is my medical definition)
and the fat surrounding your organs, When you are lean that internal fat starts to go also.


Anyway it use to be around 30 or 40 bucks for a dunking.

Actually it is too darn cold be dunked, wait until February and it warms up.

I have an excel file that calculates everything according to Jackson-Pollock for the 7 point test. It also shows the measuring positions.

What type of caliper do you guys use? Any links to a good set? I checked out the Jackson-Pollock site and those digital ones looked pretty descent. Any suggestions for those that use them.
 
SHOOOOOOTTT SHAWTY...im only 2% b/f cuz muh friend told me..and he is a personall trainer at golds gym!...i trust his methods..cuz he is "certified"

CSULB does dunking at their kinesiology dept for $20. :)
 
Im in the process of getting back in shape.
So i bought one of those bodyfat scales.
Im 5' 10" 212 lb wear 36" pants and it said I was 28.5%
Now im not veiny but come on THAT CANT BE RIGHT!!!
needless to say it has still given me a complex.
in fact I plan to post a pic just to get some feedback so ill ask for the
"Official Elite Survey Method" then ill really know what it is.

the electronic scale says im 26% i get dunked im around 14-16% depending on time of year. electronic scales etc dont work well for more dense muscle people
