i've found that asian culture puts more emphasis on that than christians. I came from a christian family and I've had relatives that lived their last days in nursing homes... sure their kids paid for it... but in my asian friend's families, they move their aging parents in with them until they die! most american raises people think this is too big of an inconveniece for them and their own families.Phaded said:when you are brought up in a christian home you take care of your parents when they get older.
no, just a little ignorant of the fact that almost all history classes in the US focus on US (white) history exclusively.jafo said:I dunno but should have one ..does that make me a racist

I'd let either of my parents live with me in their twilight years if they wanted, I'm no Christian though.

That's ridiculous.
US History is taught and focuses on the facts of, get this... US HISTORY, as far as I can tell.
There's world history as well, and they teach the history of the world. Imagine that.

I took plenty of US history, not much of it focuses on African American History. Lots of stuff about George Washington, not so much about George Washington Carver.jh1 said:![]()

Seriously though, African American history started in the US, yet it gets very little coverage in most US classes. The origin of their different social groups, music, the backgrounds that people came from, etc.
i think that African American history is a big part of American history, without them we would have had little to no economy.mountain muscle said:That is because it is American history. There are Americans here, not african americans.
African-American is a laughable term.
It's Black history month.
It is a small attempt at appeasement that most people just ignore.

we had a whole unit on george washington carver. i probably know morea bout him than george washington.Lestat said:I took plenty of US history, not much of it focuses on African American History. Lots of stuff about George Washington, not so much about George Washington Carver.

African American is the term for people of African Decent that are born here, similar to how we have Italian Americans.

back in college it was common to drop a course and enroll in a night school course for the easy subsitute creditLestat said:We recognize black history month specifically because otherwise there wouldn't be much attention paid to it.

Everyday on EF, as long as I and Spartacus post.....Wootoom said:I'm confused.
Spartacus said:back in college it was common to drop a course and enroll in a night school course for the easy subsitute credit
so about 6 of us in the frat took "black american history"
ordinarily this school is like 96% white
but night school was different,it was cheaper and easier
so about 66% of "black american history" was black
cut to the chase we had an oral presentation assignment
and it was to be on any significant black historical person in US history
well we in the frat did our research and did our presentations on relatively obscure figures
mine was on W.E.B. Dubois
and of course all the blacks either did martin luther or that guy who discovered peanut butter
george washington carver
the comedy being the looks on the blacks faces when each of us white boys pulled a name from the hat they hadn't a clue about
of course the instructor figured out our little game
what could he do
we all got A's
but I'm sure they did too
p.s. this was back in 1984 and a movie hadn't been made about malcolm X
so none of the blacks knew about him back then
otherwise we'd a heard about it
somebody on-air major goofed when he refered to lennox lewis as an african-americanmountain muscle said:Anyone ever heard of an african-european? That is what I thought.

Not taking the easy route and picking a someone that has a ton of material readily available and easily regurgitated?

All his faults occuried in modern America - thus he can be held to modern American standards (unlike the faults of Columbus, Washington, Lincoln, who should only be judged in the context of the era's in which they lived). Then I realised that it was our attempt to recognize the accomplishments and contributions (forced or otherwise) of all non whites to America's national success. I still don't celebrate MLK day, but I'm alright with it.

Very good post. Thats what my theory was exactly. Karma to you bro.p0ink said:hmm... where to begin...
there is a reason there is more focus on 'white history' (which is a quasi racist term to begin with), because like it or not, white men (even slave holders) were the backbone and founders of this country, its ideals, and its overal philosophy in government and life in general. it isn't some racist conspiracy, by 'the man', to focus on simply white people - it was white people that accomplished the majority of things that made this country great.
secondly, i don't see how any of you (phaded and lestat) can honestly say black people are still oppressed. oppressed by whom and how, may i ask?
and yes, the term african american is almost as dumb as italian american. why? because 99% of both groups were born and raised here, and most likely, never set foot in the country/continent their great, great, great, great, great-grandparents came from.
i'm a second generation immigrant from scotland, do i go around identifying myself as 'scottish-american'? uh, nope. why? because i was born in the US and identify was more with american culture than that of the scottish... oh yeah, and i don't need some label to somehow try to distinguish me from someone else.
the only people i consider african-american, mexican-american, italian-american, and any other labels of that sort are the people who were born in africa, mexico, and italy and legally migrated to the US.
