What's it smell like?? How long has it been there??

The standard for raw meat is about 3 days....HOWEVER, as long as it doesn't smell putrid, as long as you cook it thoroughly it still might be OK....

I've eaten ground beef more than two weeks past the sell-by date(nothing to brag abt, it just happens). I go by smell. I've been told that's dangerous, but I've always been fine, and I think it's because I buy the 3% fat(when they have it out, I load up; the last of it to be eaten is old).

The higher the fat content in the meat that you bought, the quicker it will spoil and smell bad. The leaner cuts, when well refrigerated, are much safer. Not to mention the lesser amounts of saturated fats, once you eat it.

About 2 weeks ago, we defrosted our freezer... well, needless to say, some things from the previous Ice Age started to appear.... we ended up having dinner on some lamb chops that were "to be consumed before Nov. 2004).

I am still typing... so as long as it is WELL frozen, should not be a problem

When it turns from the pinkish color to grey in the fridge, I throw it away. I left a lb in there over spring break while I was gone :worried:

gray = bad

don't know if this is necessarily true or not just what I've always done

I usually always keep it frozen until the day I plan on eating it

I agree Grey is not good - it usually stinks too...

But I too have eaten WELL COOKED grey meat...It tastes like shit, smells lousy, but it won't kill you...unless you undercook it, then it is salmonella city.

Smell is a very good way to judge wether or not its bad. Ive noticed it usuaally turns grey after being thawed out. I think the blood runs and is replaced with water...Maybe
