300 is more than anyone in my gym has ever pulled

Hmm, that can't be right. I have been deadlifting since I started my 5x5, never did the exercise before and I can do 305x3, no straps etc, didn't seem that bad.. I am only 180lbs.. I use good form, just kept adding weight every week, but I still haven't come close to failure. Its hard on my hands a bit (no gloves), but I hold the bar a little lower in my grip now and its good. I can deadlift more then I can squat or bench for sure.

Did a little competition here in Iraq last night and pulled 435 at 183 lbs.

I REALLY want triple bodyweight. I'll be starting a DF5x5 within a week, so I'll be very interested in seeing the effect the program will have on my deadlift, squats, and bench. I also want bodyweight military press. After that, it will hopefully be on to a double bodyweight bench.

So many goals...so little time... :)

i just came into the forum looking for something on deads

i have done deads 4 times over the past 5 years - one session yesterday, one session about a year ago, and a couple of bullshit sessions sometimes before that

im natural, dieting (low cal, low carb :( ), weigh 178ish at the moment at 5 9, and i pulled 400 for one after a couple of work sets at 320

cant say i felt much the next day though, dont know if ill do it again..
glad i found this post

up to 440 for a single after a few work sets at 350 then 400 for 2-3 reps

would be nice to hit 500 before the end of the year...but then, celebrating new years with a torn up back isnt a fab idea if things go wrong ;)

most pulled was 265 in comp and 290 in the gym.

God I miss powerlifting :(

I agree with AAP and needsize that deadlifting is not the most effective way of building muscle but I still do them about once a month or so to do something diffrent.

Even though I don't think deadlifts are good for training I do believe that they are a very good test of strength.

Gonna do something very unwise here and argue with a knowledgeable mod.

AAP said:

People do deads on the day they train back and after such a draining effort of hauling weight up off the floor for no reason, they don't have enough energy, focus or CNS reserves to really hit the back the way it is suppose to be hit.

-I have to agree with this statement. I've always done it as part of my leg workout or at the end of a back workout. I cannot, for the life of me, picture being able to do a decent barbell row workout after doing deads.

What part of the back does it hit? Lower back? You can do hyper extensions and reverse hypers to detail that area.

and you can do leg extensions to detail the quads. By this logic, one shouldn't squat?

And a detailed area will always look better and bigger than a thick area.

- a detailed area that is thick will always look better and bigger than a detailed area that isn't thick. You're going to have a tough time convincing anyone that hypers build more muscle on the lower back than deads.

Deads touch on other areas with the stress (whole body actually), but I am going to tell you that you are not going to get the same growth inducing size from deads that you will get from exercises that target your back more specifically and in better harmony than with your natural body biomechanics. Face it. When you are hauling something up off the floor, the primary movers are your quads anyway. As any Good Employee Safety Program says... lift with your legs.

- agreed! that's why I almost always did them as part of my leg workout.

You want rods of iron going up your mid back to your skull? Then work the traps with that intensity. Most people simply do barbell, dumbell or machine shrugs for traps. Hello? Have you seen an anatomy chart of trapezius location and composition? Those things run 3/4 of the way down your back. But most people don't realize this and train accordingly. Sitting on a row machine, you can hold the handle and try to pinch your shoulder blades together without bending your elbows and thicken the mid traps. You can hit lower traps by hanging from a chinning bar or on a lat machine and shrugging your shoulder blades down and backwards. The range of movement is about 2 inches and if you do it right, it will cramp hard on every rep.

- or you could do 1 exercise (deads) that do the work of 4 exercises (hypers, reverse hypers, "shoulder blade pinches" and "lower trap chin-bar reverse shrugs")

Also, don't be fooled by so and so pro BBer saying they do them. I know for a fact that Lee Haney never did deadlifts, despite being photographed and filmed doing them. He just did that to follow a script someone else wrote. Hell, in Lee Haney's gym, deadlifts are forbidden. You do them, they show you the door.

Lee Haney had awesome lats, but a pretty piss-poor lower back. Of course, he was also naturally wasp-waisted, so I'm sure this contributed to things.

You take all that energy and time you are wasting in doing deads and apply it to a more intelligent and thorough back and trap workout and you will see much better results.

your use of the terms "more intelligent" and "thorough" are quite arguable. Saying that it's more intelligent and thorough to use 4 exercises to do the work of 1 exercise (that also has several other fringe benefits) is pretty...well...arguable. :P

Besides, the lower back area is composed more of tendons and connective tissue than actual muscle. I can assure you that when you reach 40 years old, you are NOT going to be happy with fucking around in that area with heavy weights 10 years prior.

well, i'm almost 40 years old, and "fucking around" in that area is certainly a bad idea, but properly performed deadlifts certainly will help you more than they will hurt you.

Not going to argue about waist size issues, although I don't think they will widen the waist anymore than squats. I also agree with Tier and others in that frequency, for me, was lower, generally best at every other week.

funny i posted on here like 3 or 4 months ago.. i just started pulling seriously and hit my 415 initial goal in like 1 month.

i just hit 485 after a few months of focusing on the pull... doing 405 for 6reps now.

nice to see the progress.. i only pull once a week at 2x5 and do 1rm every 3 weeks for 2weeks in a row. my dl wont stop going up...

415 @ 6'1" 190 lbs. probably could've pulled 425 but i called it a day. give me a little time and 425 is going down! or up i should say

lol 1 month later i pull 500 for 1 and 435 for 5.... i thought id be stuck at 485 to.. my abs hurt and it was a slow pull.. but it just keeps going.. i did heavy ab work the whole month twice a week and added heavy tension band bulls for speed.

I've hit 635, but I used straps and used a forward grip on both hands. I hate flip grip. I am not a powerlifter though... just a freak with big legs and thick spinae erectors.

been doing deads for 2-3 weeks now. did my set at 225 this past sat. couldve gone a little higher but im trying to keep my form.

update for me: recently pulled 385lbs @ 175. Good or just average? I'm not really a heavy lifter or bodybuilder, mainly training for strength gains. Any experienced DLer's got advice about reps and weight I should be doing. I pull heavy once a week and on this day I do some upperbody lifts: bench, push press, decline etc. Should I go for higher max on dl or should I pull 225 for 20-25 reps. what is better for power and athletic performance.

my best is 776.25 lbs currently.(prob get over 800 if spent few weeks tapering and on gear) and do that many times in my training. off gear too. not training particulary for it either. body weught 19st 7lbs

cheers r

501lb's is my best pull , may be a while befor i do that again though as im trying to drop bodyweight to compete @ 90kg's :)

475lbs @ 185....tried 500lbs and grip gave out. I have over 500lbs in me, but my damn grip sucks and I refuse to use straps. My gym also banned chalk. I might be at 475lbs for awhile ha.

Ive got a new pb a couple of days ago, but its cost me, I got 255kg up and Ive pulled/torn my right trap, even shaving hurts :worried:
remember, be carfull

1205 raw @ bodyweight of 100lbs, but that was before i strained my left nutsack from masterbation. Now it's more like 900 at bodyweight of 95 lbs

pulling 335 for 8 right now, just got over a back injury. Guessing my max would be around 415 or so.

first time I did 600 was when I weighed 210 in the 200 class back in 2000. this last july I did 6 again and I was 236 in the 242 class. I gotta cut some weight or pull harder for a 3x body weight. I working on it though.

518LBS AT 168LBS (3XBWT) AT 40 YRS OLD MASTERS CLASS.DID THIS ON SEPT. 30,2006 .HAD MORE TO GIVE . GOING FOR 555LBS IN DEC,2006 MEET... :fro: :fro: :fro:

Damn!! I pulled 505lbs raw @ 195lbs. One day I will be in the 600's

training seriously for a month now, sitting at 168 @ 6', 290 lbs. for 4 reps. would be higher but grip fails. might try alternating grips next time...

If we could just get Andy Bolton in here to comment and add to our poll he could be the first to say he done 1000 lbs.

Nice work. Add some ab work if you dont already. Kelso shurgs are helpful as well. 2-3 sets of good mornings for sets of 12-15 can be nice too.

LOL actually I dont. I have just realized that I need to immortalize myself as much as I can before I fall apart.

I"VE HIT 605 IN A MEET. I am about 70# stronger in a meet than in the gym
for some reason.
The most I have seen anyone do that I know is all natural is 700 in a meet.

Got 455 for the first time ever a month ago, never thought I could lift that much but now I might set a goal for 500 even though I don't really power lift.

I think I did 45lbs at least 5 times today.

best lifts
1999 Pan Am Games in Atlanta
6 ft. 5 @ 238 competed in the 242's
Squat 3rd lift 590
Bench 3rd lift 390
Deadlift 3rd lift 660

Idk if this is good or not, 315lbs @125, but that was quite easy i figure im at 345ish but cant really say, all i had on was a squat suit no wraps, im also like 5'5"

Did 450 at 185lbs body weight. I only do 2 sets one time a week. I DL with no gloves/straps etc.(I never use gloves or wraps for any exercise). With straps/gloves I could probably do a lot more, grip gets tough over 400, actually bent my wedding ring :). Never did or even seen steroids or used anything stronger then creatine. I know I have a lot to learn about dl'ing, I hear with proper technique you can add quite a bit of weight to the lift. I just pick up the bar now :p .

I've been back into training the deadlift for about two months now... I think we've actually pulled maybe twice.... I hit 555 for a double last week.... things are going pretty well....

Agreed. The few times I've gone it's been because I didn't have the energy to drive all the way to the one by my work in Alexandria. Where do you usually go? I've been looking for one a little closer to home for weekend stuff or when I take a day off, but so far it's crap crap and more crap.

I tend to go to different ones depending on what muscle groups I want to work. Sometimes I'm in Rockville, sometimes Virginia

The only gold's gym in the district partially worth going to is Vann Ness

The 2 gold's gym's in Arlington are by far the best
The Annandale gym and the one on Carlin Springs (Alexandria) are good as well

*edit*
Honorable mention
Tyson's Corner
Merrifield

In general the gym scene in DC is weak...

Arlington...there are three, aren't there? One in Rosslyn, one in Ballston, and one on S. Glebe. I've only been to the one on Glebe and it was ehhh. I don't know which one you mean by Carlin springs, though...my usual gym is the one down richmond hwy (Rt. 1), aout five miles past old town.

If there's one in Rosslyn , then I need to go to it.

There's a gold's gym on Carlin Springs and Lessburg Pike right where that Vitamin World is. Just pull into the parking lot of the vitamin world and take the parkinglot down the hill.... Can't miss it

*edit*
I'm sure you knew this but at this point Leesburg Pike is called King Street
You can get off on King Street W on 395

The one in Rosslyn is on N Oak and either Wilson or Clarendon. I have a friend who lives in a condo in that area. I can't recommend it, though, because i haven't been there, and she just does cardio.

My deadlifting days are over thanks to bad form from my ego getting me to try a ridiculous amount of weight. My back recovered after a year and I fucked it up again doing the same thing

The Most I ever remember getting up was almost 4 years ago and it was 1 x 335 @ 140 bw.

I just started my first 3 x 5, though the dl's you only do one set. I did 5 x 185 to start, it seemed pretty light so I'll be moving that up quick I think.

update...
pulled 415 @ bw of 145...
...the week after i missed 425... just couldnt quite lock my shoulders back...
...tomorrow im going after 420...

Im starting to do heavy deads again, my last 5th set, was 405 x3

Nice poundages there bro. Really close to doing 3x bw.

I never train for deadlift, but a few days back i decided to try it.

What do you know . . i pulled up 405.

I believe that's good for never doing a deadlift in my life.
