i'm working on a report comparing water consumption for Albertan oil sands production to domestic (U.S.) conventional crude production :eek2:

I'm also doing oil shale and fischer-tropsch coal-to-liquids; those 2 are pretty bad

we use alot. all the people who say we use brackish water so that we can be allowed to use more of it, due to its un-consumabilty is bull. we use just normal water, apparently we are only allowed to use so much daily, but it would be interesting to know how much we use. All the SAGD plants like mine in comparison to a normal drilling derrick must use a ridiculous amount of water, as the actual way the plant extracts the oil is by heatin water to 296 degree celsius steam, shooting it into the ground at the speed of sound and using that as well as a lifting gas to withdraw the bitumen from several hundred meters below the ground

yea, actually though most of the steam is supposedly recycled and so the water consumption isn't that horrible for sagd and css. surface mining and then using hot water to separate the bitumen is supposed to be a lot worse. even normal drilling of conventional crude in the u.s. isn't that great though, because once natural and pumped pressure isn't enough get the oil out, they basically flood the fuck out of the well with water to force the oil up. it doesn't seem to be much better than in-situ oil sands production on an average gal water / gal crude basis
