Whats the best kind of fish to buy?

I am not a big fan of fish, but i need a change from chicken. I really don't like the taste of fish, so i guess my question is what is the best tasting fish? Also what would be the best way to cook it?

i used to hate fish but now i can't get enough of salmon, i love it but it's like any meat, pretty bland on it's own, i would never, however eat it on it's own cos i don't really like the taste, just like i wouldn't eat chicken on it's own, i eat salmon with many vegetables but the one that "makes" the dish for me is leeks (slightly cooked OR raw depending on mood i'm in), just that one addition of a single vegetable has got me eating salmon on a regular basis and, like i said, i love it now. Even just some black pepper, mustard seeds and fresh dill is enough to make salmon go from a bland tasting meat to something much much more.

I like North Atlantic White Fish, things like Cod, Haddock and I love tuna steaks. No matter how many times I have tried eating salmon, I just can't do it.

Nutrition wise, all fish are a little different. Find some you like. Fresh fish shouldn't smell like fish or feel slimey. I worked in a fish market in NY for several years, so if you have any questions about cooking it, let me know.

Salmon( Chinook ONLY, NOT Atlantic or Pink )
Ahi Tuna
Snapper
Sea Bass

Oysters
Abalone
muscles and clams

tend to be the healthier choices with much more nutreints then plain fish out there

Flounder, cod and tilapia are pretty bland.

take a piece of foil, put the fish in the middle of the foil, season lightly if you wish, put a few tablespoons of salsa (I like goya) over the top of the fish.

fold the two opposing ends of the foil (along the long side of the fish) so the ends meet, roll down slightly, then pull up the two sides and fold those closed as well.

10-12 minutes at 410 (f) should be done.

I would check the fish because ovens vary and note the time it takes to cook.

Don't over cook it.

Eat plain or over some rice.

cod ,tilapia, and white fish are cheap industry fish

its like eating at Denni's instead of eating at a restuarant

I like tilapia so whatever :) It has a very nice, light taste. The other fish I'll save for the chefs when i go out.

It's expensive, but sea bass is probably one of my favorite tasting fishes. Monkfish, or poor man's lobster, tastes really good too.

And avocado on some of the more bland tasting fish really brings out the flavor.

Calamari, scallops, clams, mussels, shrimp. Big Zuppa di Pesce fan when I'm out at a restaurant. lol :)

Just has some nice marinated salmon for lunch. Talapia taste likes ass but I will it is good for you so I eat it sometimes.

i have been buying massive amounts of the pre packaged fish steaks they come in teryaki, garlic herb, and a few others.. right next to the tuna packets 35 seconds in the microwave u can't beat it, anyone else?

If you mean the ones that are steamed in a microwave pack then they're ok, that's the ONLY thing i use the microwave for. Still can't beat freshly steamed salmon or tuna, Mmmmmm :)

So true, I work in the seafood business. Cod is what fish sticks, mcdonalds fish sandwiches are made of. If budget is your concern, cod is good.

I personally like, sea bass & halibut.

While that is true one would have to pay attention to the question asked in this thread - I'm afraid you did not, most of your suggestion (although i love all of them) would make a fish hater's stomach turn.

I really don't like the taste of fish, so i guess my question is what is the best tasting fish?

It wasn't about the "quality" but what fish will taste the least like fish.

Most people who don't like fish can only get down certain types of fish.

Babe I answered his question and then gave him great advice by narrowing down his choices to Elite Fish and Seafood that taste great when prepared with honor and care.

I forgot halibut as thats good as well.

Halibut is good one.

We don't have to agree.

I think haddock is the least "fishy tasting" one i have tried. If you season it well, it will just take on whatever flavor you put on it.

Haddock is prettty good stuff. I've always been partialyl to salmon. Smoke the salmon and you've got yourself a tasty, non-fishy source of protein.

I'm LOVING cod lately.........good stuff.........but most whitefish has a very mild, clean taste.........Fish should NEVER EVER smell like fish, fishy, stinky, etc....if anything, it should smell like saltwater.....

If you have a Trader Joe's near you - their frozen fish selection is excellent and they have pre-marinated fillets too.....

stripped bass....no competition what so ever........at most asian marts you can buy it fresh ready to fry with the skin at $4.50 a pound.............omega 3's.....dha........chews like chicken but more moist and more flavorful..............you pan fry like 2 pounds and that will last you like 4 dinners...............that's like $2.25 per dinner

I am very lucky to have grown up in the environment I did. I spent most of my summers growing up as a mate on my uncles charter boat. I also spend at least 5 days a month on the water currently. I have fresh fish weekly. Store bought frozen fish is shit. Most fish prepared in restaurants come frozen on big trucks. I see why most people dislike fish when this is all they have ever had. If you are lucky enough to live near the ocean and you have a local fish market, then buy your fish there. With all that said i will list my favorite fish in order.

1. Wahoo (hands down best eating fish around)
2. Triggerfish (eats mostly crustaceans and tastes like Shrimp/Lobster)
3. Sheepshead (Atlantic Saltwater species, not the freshwater variety)
4. Mutton Snapper (Unbelievably good fish my favorite of the snapper family)
5. Cobia (Cod Ling Baby!!! These intuitive fish will follow their hooked friends
to the boat, then you can catch them too)

Cobia is a great fish fish, firm texture, mild taste, and holds flavor really well!!

i love grilled salmon, talapia and snapper. catfish, walleye and crappie are also pretty damn good. if your looking for something that will really get the test flowing, find yourself a good hooker with a little fishy smell. Nothing like a good slut with a fishy pussy. Chow down bro!

But seriously bro, salmon, talapia and snapper are awesome. I make a honey grilled salmon that melts in your mouth. Catfish, walleye and crappie are all local fresh water fish that are excellent as well.

My favs, chilean sea bass, salmon and red snapper.
