What type of carbs pre-workout for someone w/ hypoglycemia

cranny

I had a member of our gym ask me this and I wasn't sure. I assume she would need something low on the GI. She said by the time she's done working out, her blood sugar is rock bottom. Any suggestions?

I would go with oatmeal with casein protein, that will keep blood sugar levels stable for a LONG time. Also have her sip on some whey protien DURING training and or take some free form amino acids.

She would need to keep her diet consistently low GI- she should avoid any packaged, shelved, or instant food.

As mentioned above- oatmeal (raw- not instant), granny smith apples, etc. She is the perfect candidate for the South Beach diet. The primary means that diet uses to keep weight off is low GI food. As carbs go- she just needs to avoid simple sugars period and stick with complex carbs. Any foods high in fiber that force the body to work to break it down will keep the blood sugar in check. The biggest offender is the bread. I really haven't found a "safe" bread yet. Ezekiel 4:9 bread is about as close as I have found- but I think it still raises the blood sugar.

Hope that helps.

Yeah oatmeal is definitely the best of the really accessible low GI carbs.

Also true rye bread is a great choice, but most people dont mention it since all the rye you see marketed in grocery stores is about 80% white flour.
100% rye bread has a very low GI rating. You'll have to look for it in a health food store though.
