i hear that whey is basically useless if not used directly after workouts. so what is the best kind for your money? i hear about isolates, etc. maybe casein..i've had that before..
Whey isn't necessarily useless throughout the day, it's just that it is absorbed and utilized by the body so fast so you will be hungry again very quickly. That is why it is perfect as an after-workout protein.
If you use a whey shake during the day, I think eating a fat source with it will help slow digestion. Or make sure the shake is a combination of proteins - whet, casein (milk protein), and egg. This also is a good thing for a pre-bedtime shake - slow acting proteins.
If you can't find what you want at the store, check out www.proteinfactory.com. You can "build" your own protein powder.
Its absorbed so fast that you can't use it efficently and waste most of it actually. Meat is your best protien source. Eggs and dairy products (unless you have a photo shoot in a week or can't tolerate them) are very good as well.
something that will be absorbed by your body over extended periods of time...meat, fish, cheese, eggs, some nuts (bu don't overdo it) are excellent choices...i only consume whey when i cannot get to my source of food...solid food=solid results
also adding fats to your protein sources might help slow down absorption
i am now just gonna have shakes and what not after training or when i have no other choice and need an MRP
otherwise i'll probably get my protein from:

I agree that whole food is the key and should be your first choice. However there is nothing wrong with suplimenting with a shake.
If anyone is still using a pure whey shake during the day then I give up, how many time can it be said that this is not effective. Mix in some casein and now we have a protein source that will significantly inhibited protein breakdown over a seven-hour period.
Supplementing is the key word. Everyone is right about whole foods. BFA also has a good point that he'll only take a whey PWO only. If you have no other choice (as in not cooking, the whey mixed with EFA's, etc) is okay
