What does it mean to be in Ketosis???

This is regarding a response from another thread of mine, however i am wondering if your body is in Ketosis, what does it feel like and how do you know you are in it????? :worried:

At first most people feel very fatigued, maybe a bit light headed. That can last up to 2 weeks. Ketostix are one way to tell (urine test indicators), but you can usually feel it. 48-72 hours after dropping carbs is about how long it takes to hit ketosis. Unless you have a hard-on to know exactly when you are hitting ketosis, skip the stix. Unnecesary expense.

In terms of dieting, ketosis is a state you arrive in when your body has basically used up all the carbs it has available for energy and now begins to burn ketones. Ketones are a by-product of processing protein.

How do you know if you in ketosis? The best way is to use ketone strips (like a litmus paper). To give you an example of what you would transition through on the way to ketosis, think about the process you go through with Atkins - the first two weeks you basically go without carbs before you go into "maintenance" - you always hear about how crappy people feel - you get spacy, irritable, etc. because your body (and brain) has run out of carbs to draw on for energy and begins to start looking for another energy source. So you enter ketosis when your body finally makes the switch over to the ketones and the symtoms are gone. But because you have now to run on ketones you will get tired more easily, not be able to train harder.

But if you are trying to run a controlled CKD diet, your best bet is to use the ketone strips (available at health food stores & any place that sells Atkins stuff) to track it.

i am not on a atkins routin or diet by no means, just watching the carb intake... I just didn't know how you are suppose to feel, i have been training really hard and doing long cardio sessions and do not feel fatigued at all, so i guess i am eating the right type of carbs...

To compare, in the CKD you are generally keeping your carb consumption to 20-30g / day for 5-6 days and then do a carb refeed on the weekend. Generally unless that is your goal (to achieve ketosis), you don't really want to be in ketosis from extremely low carb intake.
