What do you think of drinking egg whites?

I've heard differing opinoions on the digestability, also I was thinking that since it's a liquid it wouldn't be broken down aswell. What does everyone else think?

Get some chickens. You'll love 'em.

I bought some egg whites but found that I'm really not using them. I've ended up just kind of "using them up" by tipping some over my chicken and rice for a little extra protein before removing it from the pan. No, I don't eat our pet chickens. ;)

how many chickens do you have?

Chickens have a tendency to

1. shit all over the place
2. peck at everything

I had a couple of chickens when I was a kid, but they were too rambunctious for our house
 
We had 8 chickens for a year until a fox got in and took half of them. We strengthened security and our vigilance and upped the number to the current 16 birds.

They do take a bit of looking after but not a lot and we have enough space for them to roam free inside the electric fencing. Fresh eggs taste way better than any shop-bought ones I've ever experienced.

I drink 2 cartons per day right now of liquid egg whites.. i hold my breath and chug, I chug a perfect cup... you get used to it.

Personally I can't beat the convience of them.

Does chugging EggBeaters work too?
 
The carton liquid eggwhites are ultra pastureized. Easy way to use them is mix them with something, like in a yogurt smoothie. The Blue Bunny brand for instance has only 2 gr. of sugar, 13 gr. of protein. mix in 12 tbsp. of liquid eggwhite and you added another 20 gr. of protein, for 33 total in a quick drink. Plus the probiotics from the yogurt.

The thing about uncooked eggwhites a B deficiency....just take a B complex if you are worried about this, but I would imagine that most folks on a bodybuilding diet are getting plenty enough B.
 
I wouldn't do it...You'll develop a Biotin Deficency if you eat enough of them (you'd have to research how much to eat would develop it). Uncooked egg whites have a protein i believe that biotin binds to. I believe that if you eat the whole egg raw it gives you enough biotin where a deficiency should not develop. Skip the raw egg whites (i used to eat them) and drink a shake instead.

Ixnay on the Chuggin Eggwhites, Dr. Love.

Binds to all sorts of goodies and bacteria in the gut and reeks havoc on your small intestine over the long haul... not to mention the joy of chugging spittoon consistency pseudo phlegm. Raw eggwhites 'clarify' wine and other distalate products and basicly bind to damn near all bio active 'flora' in the intestinal tract, thats the stuff you want to keep, not get rid of... so, rather that chug albuma-gizm: make an omlette and eat.

Well, after Ghede's post, I guess I won't be chugging any more cartons of EggBeaters.

Where can I find liquid egg whites (as opposed to Beaters) for cooking, etc?

Are they sold at the grocery store? I've never seen 'em there.

Simply microwaving the liquid pasturized egg whites instead of chugging is more beneficial for one's GI tract?
 
Biotin was the only problem I ever heard of before. I wonder if Ghede could be a bit more specific, it ultra pastureized eggwhites have the same effect.

Never heard that before, raw eggwhites yes, 100% agreement.
 
Sorry y'all: pasturized or ultra pasturized refer only to the Flash Process in terms of killing on-board bio hazards in the eggwhites, not the eggwhites inherant ability to 'clarify' the medium they pass through. Unless you denature that albumin (cook it) its gonna suck up many of the goodies that it passes over, its part of the wonder and usefullness of eggwhites. We just dont want that in our digestive tract as the modus du jour.

Here is a better overall question: WHY would you WANT to chug eggbeaters?!?! I would rather suck a bulldogs nose til his ass burps like tupperware! COOK THEM!!! make an omlette! a frittata! wouldnt you rather EAT than chug them?!

Granted, denaturing the proteins by cooking them makes them more bio-available, exactly what we DONT want in terms of 'dieting', we dont want 'high-quality' or super high bio availability, we want SLOOOOOW digesting proteins, LOW quality by definition of absorbtion is what ya want.

THAT having been said, you should be consuming some fats and carbs with your proteins regardless, they work together in terms or attenuating absorbtion in our favor: the proteins and fats lower glycemic load/index of ALL carbs, the carbs and fats slow the digestion of proteins which is the grail in this case.

My take is the process of chugging eggwhites/eggbeaters is about as palatable as doing shots of snot, so I dont do it for that reason alone.

As far as eggwhites: buy em wholesale, look in the yellow pages for catering/bakery supply and tell them you are an at-home caterer so you can buy them wholesale. They come in cases of 4-6 half gallons, and come frozen and are the very VERY cheapest form of protein you can buy. period.

Nice explanation.....will try to reference it. I myself would never chug them alone. Your description fits them well.:) Other protein, fats and carbs are always taken with them.

I will never chug "eggbeaters" again, those are too thick.

Snot consistancy, sure... easy of use... completely. Chug 1 cup. EW eat cup of oats and 1 banana and i'm good to go in the morning for meal #1.

Unless I see some evidence of this... it's just too easy for me not to keep chugging them uncooked.

The body is such a resiliant organism as well... and i'm sure I won't be eating this way forever. If I do... hopefully I'll have a chef someday that will cook for me, so i won't have to chug any longer and sip protein shakes by the pool. :)
 
to avoid gagging...

hold breath, breath through mouth when not chugging eat something immediately after and one never tastes the "snot."

This is interesting because the the white of an egg contains the embryo and its initial function is to absorb all the nutrients/minerals/vits contained in the yolk.

The two studies i have regarding the Avidin raping the Biotin out of the tract are completely null and void of the Flora grabing effects, but upon rereading them I did happen upon a couple of good barometers for making a guessagnosis of Biotin deficiency: hair thickness and turgidity. If your hair starts to feel like straw and is splitting or cracking way more easily than usualy, then you might just have found the culprit.

Pasturizing eggwhites to 134f for about three minutes is the process used to eliminate Salm. and the vague possiblility of Clos.Prfgns. in your egg whites. I can tell you, and I am sure you already know this, that if you are going to go for the super high bioavailability of liquid (NOT RAW) eggwhites, that you should be sure to include some carbs and some fats in their consumption, they are way to easy to assimilate and your body simply cant utilize a whole assload of protein in very short window. Slow down the absorbtion rate.. er.. um... wouldnt COOKING them slow it down? yes. a lot. then you could avoid at least some of the carbs and fats in the process...

I guess its more about my personal preferences than not: I think they are mighty harsh things to consume. I would rather EAT than drink my food. I like to chew, its more satisfying. On the perceived Betaine bonanza from drinking liquid eggwhites, there really isnt all that much to shake a stick at, I would rather get my betaine from my MRP/Protein supplement of choice ISO AGB. The glut of choline in eggwhites sounds interesting, but if you have a well rounded protein scheme through your week, you dont need to fret Aminos OR BCAAs, a huge waste of money from my perspective.

I will hunt for some hard paper on the nasties of eggwhite consumption, and you are absolutely right: until you read otherwise, from MULTIPLE sources, just do what do and do what you have been getting good results from.

Oh, and be sure to get that chef... and the pool.

I agree, I would rather eat my food than try to chug it down, even though lately even eating feels like a chore (what with having cleaned up my diet.....go figure, yano?)

I'm interested in this egg white thing...you can buy them? Are they real egg whites or an egg substitute like Egg Beaters? The only way I can have real egg whites is when I hardboil them and throw away the yolk. It would be awesome if I could buy straight egg whites.

Egg beaters are good but mixing and eating them in combo with hardboild egg whites add variety and a different texture. IMO egg whites are just better.

No kidding. You can buy them, in bulk, they are cheeeeeep and last for ages. Costco, Sam's Club, any Wilton Bakery Supply, ANY/EVERY dairy wholesale supply: really use the Home-Caterer angle and tell them you will pay in cash and you will get a major discount below any retail protein source.

Just hit the yellow pages or ask your favorite restauranteur who they buy the bakery stuff from, you will be suprised how nice those restaurant types can be... :)
 
Just cook them, seriously I sleep in late about every morning and in about five minutes you can turn your stove on high put a dozen eggs on and kind of mash them together and maybe put some salt and pepper in them. I then wrap the mashed eggs in two tortillas. Takes about 5 minutes to eat them but great protien source and not as nasty as chugging egg whites. Eggs can be bought for a dollar a dozen so its a dirt cheap source of good protien.
