what about fruit?

New member
I lift every other day religiously and try to eat right
(high protein, low fat, no enriched grains) and thought
I was doin well...A few days ago a friend who plays
hockey and lifts weights told me that eating a lot of fruit can
hurt muscle tone, I guess because it contains a fairly
high amount of sugar. I always thought that fruit was a
good part of a healthy diet (I dont eat THAT much - maybe two
or three pieces of fruit a day) Should I stay away from it?
let me know what you think
thanks

I'm sure scientists can find a reason not to eat every type of food --

I ate 2-3 servings of fruit everyday on my cutting cycle and still got very ripped -- it gives me enough energy for a super intense workout -- which is where the real gains occur

true, there are plenty of reasons not to breathe (air toxins etc), yet we just keep on doing that too :)

i guess what they're not saying it's bad necessarily they're saying its all about the timing that you eat the fruit... that the sugar in fruit will not be used to replace gylceren (sp?) stores within your muscles, only those within your liver, so, eating a piece of fruit early in the morning is good, eating it after a big meal is probably not the best idea... according to this article at least..

there is nothing wrong with eating fruit, especially considering all the other things out there that people stuff their faces with.. eeek...

I have about 1-2 pieces of fruit a day, but its early in the day.

I also think it depends on how active you are, and how intense your workouts are if sugar is going to help or hurt you.

There's nothing wrong with eating fruit. The sugar in fruit isn't 'bad'. Some people have become so focused on Ketogenic diets that they tend to believe that carbs are the enemy on any diet and this just isn't true. Just like fat isn't the enemy like so many diets in the past have said. It all depends on the kind of diet you choose to eat. If you are eating balanced, then there's nothing wrong with fruit. In fact, it is very good for you. Timing is an important issue. You want to eat your fruit early as they've said or at least before your workout. If you workout in the evening, then there's nothing wrong with a piece of fruit 45 minutes before hand to refill your liver glycogen and give you energy for the workout. It's true that fruit is off limits to anyone trying to get into or stay in ketosis. It's the worst carb you can eat in that respect. However, everyone isn't trying to do a ketogenic diet, so to answer each question asked as if they are does them a disservice. Enjoy your fruit, just make sure you eat it timed so that you will use the energy it affords you and it doesn't get stored for the next day.

Gee, I wonder who this could be directed at...

I believe fruit juices have a higher potential to be detrimental to your physique than fruits. Fruits can do the same thing, but so can any carb source. Fruits are probably better since they are low in calories and it is much harder to eat lots of calories from eating actual fruits, versus eating fruit juices its really easy to pile on the hundreds of calories fast.

Processed carb sources like bread and pasta are alot worse than fruits. There comparable to fruit juices because they are high in calories and easy to eat. From my experience I think Fruit juices may be slighty better than bread and pasta , I think they make me feel full faster or stomach feeling weird versus pasta and bread. Unless if you can limit yourself to 1/2 a slice of bread or 1/4 cup of pasta, both are detrimental, even if you do that your still gonna bring a faster insulin release versus fruits. Calorie wise, you may be the same though.

I don't know why people reccomend having fruits, especially those with a decent fructose content, after a workout. I thought your goal after workout is to eat alot of carb calories and eating fruits is gonna limit you, and then if you eat fruits with fructose, it can slow the insulin release. If someone was to eat fruit juices after a workout, they could still eat alot of calories, but if there was a fructose content, it would slow down the insulin release versus eating all glucose.

Fructose resupplies the liver with glycogen first, if the liver is full, then via the pentose phosphate pathway, all additional fructose goes to fat.
In conclusion, too much fruit=bad, but moderate amounts are always welcome in a healthy diet.

From my understanding, the amount of fructose in fruits is low, and the some fruits that are considered "high" have only approx 50% of the carbs coming from fructose. This could be wrong, please correct it if it is, I don't have a sugar composition chart and don't know where to find a good one?

If that is true, then someone would have to eat 100g of carbs from high fructose fruits to get 50 grams of fructose, but chances are they will be eating a variety of fruits, including those with a low fructose content, so then they would have to eat at around 150 grams of carbs from fruits to get 50 grams of fructose. I don't know what the exact amount of fructose per day is allowable before it becomes sat. fat but many people say around 50, so I"m just using 50 as an example. If its more like around 60 or 65, then you could eat alot more.

This is why I don't think fruit juice is good, because then you could easily be eating too much fructose, but when you eat real fruits, its much harder.

take a look at the suzanne sommers diet... its just like
atkins but allows you to have fruit and fruit alone for breakfast... no carbs at all the rest of the day

Another note about fruit is that if you remove it from your diet for a long period of time, you are also removing the good things (enzymes, etc.) that come from it. There more variety in your diet, the more likely you are to get the things that your body needs to run. For ex, if you follow a restricted high protein diet (e.g. contest prep) for months at a time, it may come back and bite you in the butt - its good to cycle off and eat "normal" every now and then! The secret w/ fruit is just eat it before noon.

Sassy makes a good point. I think we are all guilty to some degree of getting so caught up in counting calories/carbs/protein/fat that we forget about vitamins, minerals, enzymes, etc. that we need and can only come from certain fruit sources. Nutrition tends to become a secondary consideration after muscle/fat impact from our diet.

What is the purpose of eating enzymes?? I our body makes them. Vitamins and Minerals can be supplemented, but I'm not saying not to eat fruits and veggies. The amount of vitamins and minerals in most fruits and veggies is nothing comparble the amounts in a supplement. This is from looking at the labels of the ones I eat, sometimes a specfic vitamin, like A or C is high amounts, also maybe a few others.

There's absolutely no point in eating enzymes...enzymes are just proteins and the body breaks them down into amino acids before they can do anything useful

As for fruits and vegetables you can actually supplement the vitamins and minerals in a pill and pill form is probably just as good as food form...BUT in the pill you miss out on thousands of phytochemicals etc which probably prevent cancer and do all sorts of nifty things

i agree that you don't need fruit for vitamins and minerals. You can find all the vit a, b, c , d, e, f, g you need in non sugary land and sea vegetables.
