water versus sodium intake

Hello everyone i'm new to this site and look forward to gaining knowledge from all of you.So far I've learned I need at least 1.5 grams of protein per pund of bodyweight while training.I alo see the recomended amount of water is 1-2 gallons of water a day.My question is with that amount of water intake does it offset any higher sodium intake? Thanks in advance!
 
well the extra water will dilute some of the extra sodium..couldn't find any references to how much though

Hey welcome to EF :) IMO, there is no special secret formula re: water intake vs sodium ... your goals, body, exercise intensity, and tons of other factors have an impact on daily water intake ... Now if you're asking can you have more salt b/c your water inake is high? I personally think the answer is yes ... b/c I don't really need to watch my sodium, yet I don't use salt or consume high sodium foods all too often, and i easily drink 8-10 L of water a day .. & my kids process everything just fine (so sayeth the docs :)), I do not 'bloat' and not holding too much sub Q water ... that can all be manipulated with a clean diet ... at least for me.

You may, however be different ... I would suugest upping your water intake slowly, not all the sudden pounding 2 gallons a day... that feeling is no fun :)

Oh and if you're not an avid marathon runner, I wouldn't worry too much about hyponatremia (or low plasma sodium level)...

Lots of water can affect your electrolyte balance. Some folks get severe headaches, etc. Keep your electrolytes up(sodium, potassium, magnesium, etc.) and you will be fine.
 
Thanks for the replies and information.I'm not too keen on regular water so I've been drinking propel for the vitamins and minerals.oh and it tastes good too.
 
Well, a person doesn't usually need extra sodium when drinking a lot of water unless they're body is failing to absorb the sodium, or you are going overboard with the water. Typcially you will get enough unless you are trying to avoid sodium.

Water does help offset excessive sodium intake, as sodium, like most other nutrients, your body will absorb as much as it needs and pee out the rest, so have more water makes it easier for your body to dump the excess.

However when you really get hit is lots of water + lots of sweat + low sodium. So if you are very active and its very warm and you are sweating, keep your sodium/electrolytes up. Well known desert survival techniques stress sodium intake almost as much as water.
