I never said that Chuck's feet were touching or even bracing the sides of the monolift. I see in the video where Chuck's toes only (if even his toes touch that is questionable) maybe barely touch the sides of the monolift. I was making an analogy, illustrating a point.

Where in my paragraph did I mention Chuck specifically or if Chuck's feet were touching the monolift? I did not anywhere. If indeed his toes were touching or braced against the monolift, then he could use some leverage to keep his feet driving straight down into the ground (as oppossed to out). This could help him with focusing his effort in an upward motion. However, read the post more carelfully and keep things in context with the subject matter.

If you are tired of watching this thread detiorate, then why did you make yourslef the 29th. post and add to everything else? I tried to move on until you posted your comments.
 
My old training partner (Mike Ruggeria) who trains at westside barbell told me that Louie tells his guys practice pushing on the sides of the monolift for extra leverage. I was also told that their groove briefs are really thick because they sew 4-5 pairs together on top of thier suits which are 3-5 layers thick.

flex-mb...just because my post followed yours does not mean that I was talkin to you specificially. The Physics points were valid...however they did not apply to this situation as his feet are not against the lift. The feet against the monolift arguement was posted above by strongestsurvive. If the shoe doesnt fit....then dont take offense to it.

Why did I waited till I was 29th to post...does it matter. My opinion is as valuable as the next. And truth be told I dont think Chuck V. gives a shit about mine or anyone elses opinion. He DUNKED A GRAND...it is in the books...and no one can take that away from him.
 
To all:

I have enjoyed reading your comments and advice on this thread and others.

All else equal, I'd say this argument on the validity/non-validity of Chuck's was a good thing - different opinions helps everyone learn and sharpen their ideas. But you guys shouldn't let it get too personal. We shouldn't be attacking each other -- there are plenty of people out there deserving of our anger (btw, if any of you need a stress reliever, you're welcome to smack my boss around a little :).

Not to sound like Tony Robbins, but at least here we have people who share the same goals and beliefs - we should encourage that.

and, fwiw, independent of whether you think Chuck's lift was legal or not, you have to admit he must have bowling balls between his legs to have the guts to get under that bar!!!

Theres' nothing more that I like than a physics discussion....hell, it gives me wood. And I totally agree with flex-mb about how bracing the sides.....it gives you another surface to push off of, therefore bringing even more muscles into the lift. But watching the video, only his toes "might" have been touching the sides, and weakly if that. You can see right before he lifts off the bar that he raises his toes in a sort of rocking fashion, this means that his feet are not that hard wedged if he could do that. It's an impressive lift, don't particularly care for all the equipment and the sumo stance.....but it's allowed so fuck it!!!

ps. Looking at that monolift.....WTF happens if the bar has to fall of your back?? With a rack there is something for the bar to fall on and gives you room underneath if you have to bail at the bottom of the lift....what's the deal with this thing?? Isn't a rack safer??
 
BigPhysicsBastard--excellent post. I agree with the Physics points that were made. I just simply said that his feet did not appear to be in the position to take advantage of that extra leverage.

As for the Monolift..its just you against the world. If you have to dump it... you have to dump. At a meet this weekend I saw Beau Moore dump his opener...then come back to hit 920 on his third attemp.
 
I have never seen a meet that did the lift inside the rack. Usually it is squat stands. There are dangers to a rack also. If you dump the weight you could possibly get pinched between the rack and the bar. The person that is in the most trouble if the weight gets dumped is the rear spotter.

The monolift is pretty rare. Costs a lot of $$.
 
to get pinched between the rack and the bar you'd have to fall sideways, in which case it wouldn't matter because with no rack you'll just get pinched between the bar and the floor. I still don't understand why that monolift wouldn't have horizontal supports.
 
I was thinking of a hand getting pinched. Meets have spotters for safety. They probably don't use a safety cage because they don't need them. Not a lot of people get hurt in a powerlifting event. I have been to about 100 meets and the only injury I have seen is Brent Mikesell tearing a bicep in the deadlift.
