Upright Rows?

upright row: something a bodybuilder does because he cant shrug more than 405.

in all seriousness... this question probably belongs on the bodybuilder forum. if powerlifters did upright rows to their trap and shoulder capacity, they would break their wrists.

Funny you should mention that Irishpower. I had not done these in forever, but I get a wild hair from time to time, and remember seeing my dad doing these when I was a kid, so I tried to do them. Wrists nearly sheered off above the hands, dropped the bar on the pins, and got some really funny looks from the other gym patrons. I decided at that point rows were probably a better way to work upper back.

Dang i amnow a little embarrased! I do them from time to time. Started after my injury it felt good if i did them light. Now i go up to 100 plus only for reps 10 just to engourge my shoulder.

if done correctly, the upright row works more shoulders than traps.
if done correctly, the shrug works pretty much all traps.

Upright rows aren't all bad. However, I do believe they're one of those exercises you have to be careful with such as behind-the-neck presses and weighted dips for a full range of motion. I believe the closer you place your hands together the more they hit the upper middle back (traps) and the further you place your hands apart the more they hit your delts, especially the side and rear heads. Medium to light weight is all you need. I haven't actually done upright rows for 8-9 months. They can irritate the biceps tendon, similar to heavy squatting with hand placement too close.

SCREWBALL The reason they hit the bicep tendon is b/c you either have a BIG upright row or big biceps, what I mean by this is I do upright rows E O W the reason is b/c I perform powercleans so in order for me to pull high I have to do them. Now I feel they work traps, upper back, and lats b/c I have my pinky finger right before it reaches the grip so my pointer is on the smooth so is my middle finger and ring finger. NOW I hope I'm not a BB b/c I do them but I feel they help and really guys there aren't that many back workouts or lat works so why not do these.
