upper body compound lifting

I have read a lot of about compound lifting and how all new lifters should do it. I know about lower body compound lifts like squats, deadlifts, lunges, etc. but what are upper body compound lifts I should be doing to get stronger as well? do dips and chinups count or is it just olympic style lifts like jerks and bench?
 
They do count, but there are also the classics like bench press, overhead press, etc.
